Ratings: 972,000 watch Sam Johnson take Gold, with MKR topping the night on 1.26m viewers.

The 59th TV Week Logie Awards helped Nine to a Sunday win as the ratings race resume, but it was down on 2016 when Waleed Aly took Gold.

The marathon broadcast lasting 4 hours drew 972,000 viewers in preliminary numbers, down on 2016’s 1.12m. The Red Carpet Arrivals, at 864,000 viewers was also down on 1.06m last year.

My Kitchen Rules topped the night at 1.26m viewers, with Seven drawing an impressive share close behind Nine.

TEN’s share was off the map last night, unable to reach double figures. Elsewhere Doctor Who was down on last wee for ABC at 464,000 viewers.

Nine network won with 35.4% then Seven 33.9%, ABC 14.4%, TEN 9.9% and SBS 6.3%.

Nine News was best for Nine with 1.06m viewers then the TV Week Logie Awards (972,000) and Red Carpet Arrivals (864,000).

My Kitchen Rules was #1 for Seven with 1.26m viewers then Seven News (1.23m), Sunday Night (879,000) and The Suspects (501,000).

  1. Perhaps they should have applied the production techniques used on the red carpet to the rest of the broadcast. Rumour has it the red carpet producers were insistent the interviews ran exactly to the time allotted, and if they didn’t they were re-done. Apparently some interviews were done 2 or 3 times.

  2. With average ratings, for 4 hours, of 972k I think 9 should extend the broadcast next year to the 24:00 prime time cut off. Ceteris paribus the program average would dip a little but more importantly the 9 share would go up. (I haven’t watched the logies for the last 20 years or so, so it could go for the whole week as far as I am concerned.)

  3. I have not watched for years….I did on and off last night..(while following on here)….watched the red carpet…I don’t normally care for things posted all over the screen…but posting who dressed each person as they were interviewed…was informative and saved a lot of senseless chatter…….
I love Molly….but the end of the Logies kinda made me cringe….
How ironic…TEN did so well at the Logies…but so bad in the ratings?!?

  4. Was just rewatching the awards with my housemates who didn’t watch them last night and saw an ad for the bee gees grammy special any chance you confirm airdate David?

  5. Didn’t mind the logies this year but still annoyed that it wasn’t live into central states what gives? On the show itself I thought that it was ok. The musical guests always somehow disappoint. I think TEN if they are still around or Seven Network need to get the rights to broadcast this event. Nine had a monopoly because TV Week was owned by ACP which was part of PBL the same parent company of Nine Network so it made sense then but now with Nine being a standalone company and the ACP being sold to Bauer Media there is no point in keeping that arrangement. Amazing they pre recorded some other award segments but still ran overtime. poor producing. on brighter side Dave Hughes was funny and I didn’t mind the skit between Kate and Pete.

  6. As others have said the Logies is way too long. Dave Hughes was good. I didn’t think we needed the Hamish and Andy skit nor the Kat Stewart and Pete Heliar bit. It was good to see Lorrae Desmond but not the material. Jessica Mauboy and Casey Donovan were fantastic – no other musical acts needed.
KAK also a bit too long (especially asking for the wine). Shelley Craft taking time to get to the stage ( do they not decide who’s going up beforehand?) and the messing about with Gorgi Coghlan’s dress. I know I’m probably nit-picking but in this day and age when FTA needs every viewer they need to tighten it up.

  7. These Hall of Fame speeches are a joke. Noni Hazehurst’s last year was dreadful –far too long and self serving. KAK’s this year was the same. Asking for a glass of wine on stage takes tacky to a new level. I’m sorry but someone has to say it.
Here’s a great idea Logie Producers ( who have 12 months to get it right but never really do ).
Pre-Record the Hall of Fame before the telecast ( along with the other also rans like Lifestyle and Factual ) and then EDIT the piece so it is actually watchable.
They way it is now is just ridiculous and another nail in the Logie’s coffin.

  8. I watched 3 minutes of the logies, but it was an awesome 3 minutes of Casey Donovan singing Heroes, superb….wow….etd..her career should be much bigger than it currently is…

  9. On another non logies note. Was shocked last night on Major Crimes as Chief Taylor was killed off after 12 seasons (Inc the closer) didn’t see that coming.

  10. Musical acts, two hits, two misses, thank gawd for the sista girls. KAK just a little too long, Molly piss off. Fantastic rewards for ABC comedy, all hail Joshy. HYBPA yay. To all the other winners, popular or industry voted congrats.

  11. It is too long, but if you’d have to be an idiot to watch it live. I recorded it and watched it when it finished, so I could fast forward the ads and any tedious bits.

  12. Too many musical acts. It’s a television awards show, not the Grammy’s. Casey Donovan and Jessica Mauboy’s brilliant performances would’ve sufficed.

Michael Gudinski and Molly Meldrum’s speeches were memorable for all the wrong reasons. We can
cut Molly some slack post his accident but Gudinski needs to behave more professionally.

  13. I thought Hughsey did a fantastic edgy routine to open, and Hamish and Andy were hilarious with their Married At First Sight skit. Karl, Lisa and Sylvia did a great job of the arrivals – far more interesting than the usual ‘who are you wearing’ we usually get, especially when Karl asked Kochie if he was going to wake up with Today!! The downsides – I like KAK but her speech was sooo long. Gudinski looked unprofessional and went on far too long. Molly is a legend but he ruined the moment for poor Samuel, and it was cringeworthy television. There were many boring bits but most of us watch with a second screen – interacting with twitter/social media makes it much more entertaining during these down moments!

  14. I know it’s been said countless times before, but the running time of the Logies is a joke. I don’t think the broadcast wrapped much shy of 11.30pm (Melb) – that’s around four hours – and that’s not counting the additional 30min (and surely unnecessary) Red Carpet Arrivals show. The Oscars – which let’s face it is kind of a bigger deal! – only clocks out around the three hour mark; I’d wager there are as many award categories if not more, it’s every bit as live and probably stuffed with a similar mountain of adverts and commercial messages and promos.
Can’t we have a live to air (or as-live/slight delay) show starting straight out of the news at 7pm running to an absolute maximum of three hours including any (preferably much-shortened) pre-show?
Less viewer fatigue would surely also boost the average audience, too.

    1. I agree with you. It is too long hence why I don’t watch it anymore. When I was younger I did, but waiting around for the top gongs is too late for me so I don’t watch it at all.

Also, the added performances actually don’t interest me…I know it breaks it up but it’s just far too long.
