BBC announces Diana & I telemovie

UK project will dramatise the extraordinary impact Princess Diana's death had on peoples' lives.

The BBC has announced Diana & I, a telemovie surrounding the final week of her death, 20 years ago.

Written by Jeremy Brock (Mrs Brown, The Last King Of Scotland), it dramatises the extraordinary impact Princess Diana’s death had on peoples’ lives. It tells the story from the point of view of four ordinary people and is set across the week that followed her tragic death on 31 August 1997.

The drama traces four lead characters’ fictional stories, in parallel but at times interlinked. Each will lift the lid on one extraordinary week in time, covering the tumultuous events that followed from that fateful Sunday to Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey.

A mother, a son, a wife, a boyfriend – their human stories concern death, love, grief, greed, relationships, marriage – and will explore the role that chance and luck play in life.

The cast features Tamsin Greig, Nico Mirallegro, Kiran Sonia Sawar and Laurie Davidson star alongside Gemma Jones, Neil Morrissey, Tuppence Middleton, Charlotte Hope, Asif Khan, Kingsley Ben-Adir, John Gordon Sinclair and Roshan Seth.

Writer Jeremy Brock says: “I was compelled by the impact that incredible week had on all of us who remember it, whether royalist or not. I wanted to explore the lives of four ordinary people and how they internalised their memories of Diana in the aftermath of her death.

“The week following her fatal car crash was a week like no other before. It catapulted many of us into emotional states we rarely visit, leaving us open to new insights and new experiences. Diana & I is categorically not a film written in memoriam. It’s a celebration of what it’s like to be human – good and bad – in the unexpurgated and improvisatory shock of real life.”

ITV recently announced a documentary by the producers of Our Queen at 90. It has The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry who talk openly about their mother and offer their perspective on The Princess’ unique contribution to public life, including work on Landmines, Child Bereavement, Homelessness and HIV and AIDS.

In 1997 Toni Collette played namesake ‘Diana Spencer’ in the film Diana & Me.

  1. What a pity they couldn’t include an Aussie in this production since we were one of the first to hear the News of Diana’s passing. I can recall the day like it was yesterday. My younger brother and his partner had just become parents for the second time. As I was driving to the hospital News had filtered through that Diana was involved in a car accident and had received minor injuries. It wasn’t until I had returned home and switched on the tele and read the banner of her death. I have to admit I felt sick. So weird considering I had never met the lady. When I returned to work 2 days later even bullish men were feeling it. I also remember reading in the paper how a lot of poms were woken by their aussie cousins about her death since it occurred in the early hours their time. To this day we identify our niece with Diana’s passing.
