Foxtel: Real Housewives of Sydney “went too far”

Updated: "The bad language and behaviour throughout the series did go too far,” says Brian Walsh.

Some sense from Foxtel’s Brian Walsh telling Matchbox Pictures that Real Housewives of Sydney went too far in its vitriol.

Bravo Networks in the US is refusing to screen the series despite previously screening the Real Housewives of Melbourne.

“A lot of the women in this show were nasty for nasty’s sake and have no redeeming features,” Walsh told News Corp.

“I particularly felt Lisa Oldfield and AthenaX Levendi were driving their own agendas.”

Walsh said he raised concerns there were not enough lighthearted moments, something that would change in a second season.

“I’ve raised my concerns with the production team from this season. I felt the bad language and behaviour throughout the series did go too far,” Walsh said.

The show drew horrified reactions when viewed by families on Gogglebox.

Last month I noted it was time to “switch off and deny them oxygen” after one allegedly trolled the 13-year-old son of another.

This is the first time I’ve bothered to mention the show since…

  1. Wow, now I know I wasn’t the only one who gave up after four episodes! It just seemed the same nastiness week after week which gets boring.

  2. I’d never watched a “Real Housewives” series before Sydney. I personally loved it. Seeing them have a go at eachother every second week was entertaining. There were plenty of other things happening in the show, it wasn’t all arguments and disagreements.

  3. If Foxtel feel the show is nasty – then why are the recommissioning it – sure the brand integrity would be worth more than the ratings?

        1. Haven’t chatted in a while. On radio yesterday he alluded to recasting if they were to go again. It was still the highest-rating show on Arena this year so the odds are in its favour.

  4. Absolutely. It was appalling television and the behaviour of most of the cast was shocking. I would also add Victoria Rees to the two cast members mentioned above as an instigator of much of the worst behaviour. I abandoned this show after 4 episodes, although I skipped episode 3 (the preview just seemed more of the same) and hate-watched my way through the fourth episode. I’m wondering though, did it take the international sale to vanish before Foxtel said anything about the poor quality of this series, or is that just co-incidental?

  5. I agree with the above story. There was no real story to the series and nothing to really want you to come back and watch weekly. They just went at each other the whole time. I would be surprised if it comes back with many of the current cast next season. Bring on Melbourne.

  6. This show was disgusting.. I love the Real Housewives of Bev Hills and New York – and have enjoyed the Melbourne one. I gave the Sydney one a go – after 4 episodes I couldn’t watch anymore, those women were terrible to each other, the show never gave you a chance to get to “know” any of them, it was just screaming match, after screaming match. I don’t care if they are going back for season 2 – I will not be going back. It’s a shame it was cast so poorly, when it had so much potential.
