Rather than send reality TV couples to a tropical island, perhaps Nine could consider sending them to a landfill. The big news from last night was not just the failure of The Last Resort, but the instant success of ABC’s War on Waste.
The Craig Reucassel show pulled 759,000 viewers -enough to win the 8:30pm timeslot (save for 7:30 overruns). The show was trending at #1 on Twitter, and was even trending yesterday before its premiere.
MasterChef gave away its first Immunity pin of the season and scored 1.05m viewers for its efforts -its biggest audience since its season launch. That helped push TEN to second in network shares last night, ahead of Nine. House Rules followed with 812,000, up on last Tuesday.
But The Last Resort fell to a new low of just 383,000 viewers, fourth in its slot and nearly beaten by trains on SBS. Sadly that impacted Love Child which fell out of the Top 20 to 460,000 viewers.
ABC’s new Ask the Doctor drew 512,000.
There was also another Aussie battle taking place on multichannels with 9GO!’s new Meet the Hockers (98,000) beaten by 7mate’s Outback Truckers (178,000).
Seven Network won Tuesday with 28.6% then TEN 24.0%, Nine 23.2%, ABC 17.5% and SBS 6.7%.
Seven News was #1 with 1.09m / 1.01m for Seven then House Rules (812,000), Home and Away (708,000), The Chase (679,000 / 452,000), Seven Year Switch (529,000) and Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares (301,000).
MasterChef Australia (1.05m) led for TEN then NCIS (666,000), The Project (659,000 / 401,000), TEN Eyewitness News ( 505,000), NCIS: New Orleans (488,000) and Family Feud (409,000).
Nine News (1.08m / 1.07m) led for Nine then A Current Affair (908,000), Hot Seat (569,000 / 325,000), Love Child (460,000) and The Last Resort (383,000). Operation Thailand was just 169,000.
War on Waste (759,000) topped ABC’s night then ABC News (756,000), 7:30 (534,000), Ask the Doctor (512,000) and Foreign Correspondent (504,000).
On SBS it was Great Continental Railway Journeys (340,000), Insight (207,000), SBS World News (157,000) and Dateline (118,000).
Go Jetters topped multichannels with 219,000.
The Morning Show: 129,000 / 78,000
Today Extra: 113,000 / 73,000
Studio 10: 99,000 / 64,000

War on Waste interested me….I have been following Redgroup on Facy since I started to recycle soft plastic…and have reduced my trash bin to almost nothing….
And the ‘trains’ on SBS…the trains are merely a catalyst to an interesting story about geography/history and people…….
Really enjoyed ‘War on Waste’. Informative and entertaining. Will be watching again next week.
Again, SBS railway show did very well and it’s a 2nd time repeat of it!-there is an audience desperate for something that isn’t an idiot ‘reality’ program.
War on Waste wasn’t just hugely promoted – it lived up to the hype. It didn’t really feel like a documentary at all. Interesting, engaging, real life application and a presenter who obviously believes in his cause. I have already set the recorder for next week’s episode.
Great to see War on Waste do so well.
Quite surprised as I thought many “mainstream” viewers wouldn’t be particularly interested in a topic like this.
Am enjoying the new season of Love Child – such a shame it has been dragged down by the dismal Last Resort and has dropped out of the Top 20. Not too long ago it was rating really well.
This series of The Amazing Race is a lot better than the past few (which I gave up on). Randomly pairing the contestants to form teams has made the relationships within teams interesting.
The ncis crossover did good numbers on ten as well has to be highest figures for new Orleans since season one at least.
According to Ten, it was the highest-rating episode of NCIS since July last year, when a huge around 900k watched Michael Weatherly depart after 13 years.
They also said it was the highest-rating NCIS New Orleans since November 2014
I hope this shows 7 and 9 that viewers don’t lazily leave the TV on the same channel all night. They will seek out good shows and switch to ABC if need be.
I haven’t yet watched War on Waste, but looking forward to it tonight. I wish Australian TV had more interesting documentaries like this. I tend to watch a lot of UK shows from BBC, Channel 4, and Channel 5. They have great short run documentaries covering so many aspects of daily life which you don’t even really think about. The London Tube for instance has been covered in a few shows, and it’s really fascinating. Perhaps ABC can look over what the UK has broadcast over the last few years and look to do an Australian version of the same.
Prepare to be shocked when you watch it, I’m not going to elaborate on anything cause it could be consider a spoiler but it makes you think.
War on Waste did well to pull itself back up from Ask the Doctor which was very light weight. I gave it about 12 minutes before realising that I had some urgent filing to do.
Dismal ratings for 9! And i wonder if 7 will proceed with Love Rescue which is pretty much the same, they should just cancel that now lol
Congrats Ten 🙂
Deserved it.
Loved MasterChef last night, so feel-good when a contestant beats the pro!
