“Just doing my job” defends journo in Rebel Wilson case

Actress sobs in court as lawyer details how her life had been impacted by articles she claims were defamatory.

Former Woman’s Day journalist Shari Nemetzi, who wrote the Woman’s Day article which triggered the Rebel Wilson trial, defended her article in court yesterday.

“I don’t believe I misled my readers,” Ms Nementzik said.

“I still stand by the story.”

Bauer Media paid $2000 for the anonymous tip, to a former classmate of Wilson’s. She  told the court everyone knows tabloid magazines work on “cheque book journalism” in order to secure stories.

The story had first been pitched in 2012 but was shelved due to legal concerns, before later being published in 2015.

Rebel Wilson sobbed loudly in court as her lawyer, Dr Matthew Collins, QC, quoted from her own evidence about the impact of Ms Nementzik’s story.

“I was just doing my job,” Nementzik told the court.

Closing arguments in the Rebel Wilson case are expected to be heard today.
