Oliver Stone to direct Guantanamo drama

Oliver Stone will direct his first TV drama in a series on the world’s most controversial prison.

Oliver Stone will direct his first television drama with the first 2 hours of a new Showtime drama, Guantanamo.

Created by Daniel Voll (The Unit), who will also serve as showrunner, Guantanamo focuses on the detainees held in the world’s most controversial prison, and those who defend and condemn them.

To be produced by Weinstein Television, production is expected to begin later this year.

Guantanamo Bay detention camp was opened after the September 11 attacks to interrogate and imprison suspects in the war on terror. Human rights organisations condemn the treatment, including various forms of torture, which remains open with 41 prisoners today.

Deadline reports the series would be “immersive, highly cinematic…filled with twists and turns, that explores the dark side of how America prosecutes its war on terror.”

Australia’s most infamous detainee David Hicks spent 6 years at Guantanamo Bay before being released in 2007.

Stan has an exclusive output deal with Showtime.

  1. Having just watched Snowden which was produced and directed by Oliver Stone I can imagine that it will be a further hard hitting examination of all that’s wrong the US Homeland Security at the moment. This could be a risky venture with the prevailing anti Islamic mood outside the USA as well.
