SBS on Demand: Cardinal

Billy Campbell stars as Detective John Cardinal investigating the murder of a young girl in Canada.

No it’s not a drama about a high-ranking church official….

Canadian crime drama Cardinal begins today at SBS On Demand.

The 6 part series stars Billy Campbell as Detective John Cardinal and Karine Vanasse as Lise Delorme, investigating the murder of a young girl in Algonquin Bay.

This is an adaptation of Giles Blunt’s mystery novel Forty Words for Sorrow.

It premiered in Canada in January.

In this six-episode mystery series, burned-out Detective John Cardinal (Billy Campbell) is brought back into the Algonquin Bay Police Homicide Unit when the hunch he wouldn’t let go – and got him demoted – about the disappearance of 13-year-old Katie Pine is proven horribly correct.

With his young new partner, Detective Lise Delorme (Karine Vanasse), Cardinal relentlessly tracks Katie’s killer, which soon leads him to a series of murders that are escalating in frequency and intensity. Cardinal soon begins to suspect that Delorme has a hidden agenda of her own, and struggles to keep from her a dark secret buried in his past that keeps threatening to resurface.

As they race to catch the most brutal killer their small Northern Ontario town has ever seen Cardinal struggles to keep his head above water as the life he’s built with his wife and daughter threatens to unravel.

Thursday July 13 on SBS On Demand.

  1. I watched the whole season and recommend it if you enjoy noir stories, the only distraction was the early reveal of the predator and almost predictable ending but it was good to see Billy Campbell (Helix) and Karine Vanasse (last seen in Revenge) again. Look for Billy wearing his club rugby sweat shirt, he is a rugby enthusiast after all.

  2. Saw a couple of trailers and this doesn’t look bad though it seems quite dark. May give it a go.

Canadian television brings out some good shows like private investigator, heartland, open heart and of course orphan black.
