‘Secret Millionaire’ episode held over debt complaints

Nine was forced to drop one of its episodes of The Secret Millionaire after one of its benefactors, Leanne Wesche, accrued debts said to be in the ‘hundreds of thousands.’

Wesche went undercover visiting charities in Sydney’s Liverpool region for the show, giving away $110,000 from her own finances.

But Nine executives reportedly hit the pause button after angry creditors complained she was giving away money while debts remained.

Everything old is (apparently) new again, with word today that Johnny Young is in discussions with Network TEN for a revival of Young Talent Time.

The family show was a contemporary of the revived Hey Hey it’s Saturday, running on air from 1971 until 1988. Variety is the current buzz word at the moment after Hey Hey’s success and the popularity of A Tribute to Don Lane.

In the week that Seven announced its new digital channel it lost another week to Nine and its GO! channel. Nine’s win included its tribute to a favourite son, Don Lane. On the back of the Hey Hey reunions it was another reminder its audience loves Variety. It was also a week in which the networks trumped one another in the publicity stakes. Showbiz legend Don Lane has died, aged 75.

His manager Jayne Ambrose said Lane passed away this morning.

He had been living in a nursing home in Melbourne and was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton, he will be remembered as part of a trio of legendary TV stars from the 1970s and 80s who ruled the airways when variety shows drew millions of viewers each week.
