Bold & Beautiful in historic win at Daytime Emmys

It’s only taken 22 years, but The Bold and the Beautiful has finally won its first Best Drama Series award at the Daytime Emmy Awards (it may have helped that there were only three in contention, the other two being All My Children and Days of Our Lives).

The View’s Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and Sherri Shepherd won for Best Talk-Show Host, defeating Regis & Kelly, Rachel Ray and Ellen DeGeneres. But the gals didn’t bother to travel from New York to Los Angeles for the ceremony …

Animalia composer wins Daytime Emmy

Queensland music composer Christopher Elves has won a Daytime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for Animalia.

Elves defeated The Oprah Winfrey Show, Sesame Street, The Backyardigans and The Wonder Pets.

“It’s the most bizarre thing to happen to you,” he told the Brisbane Times.

“It’s usually only the Americans that win.”

Elves has a passion for children’s television, completing the scores for G2G, a pre-teen animated TV series for the Nine Network as well as Graeme Base’s Animalia.

Graeme Base joins CBeebies editorial council

Children’s writer Graeme Base (Animalia) will join an editorial advisory council for the CBeebies channel.

The local channel, run by the BBC, will set up the forum to identify, respond to and provide advice on emerging issues in children’s television. It will provide a platform where regulatory, programming and content issues can be discussed and debated.

Tassie dreams of kids’ TV

Looks like Tasmania is hoping to increase its output of children’s television programming with the announcement of a special initiative between Screen Tasmania and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF).

For many years it is Victoria that has led the way with the lucrative children’s genre, thanks largely to producers such as Jonathan M. Shiff’s Elephant Princess plus Crawford’s The Saddle Club, while Queensland has picked up pace with Animalia, WA had Lockie Leonard and Sydney is busy with the ABC’s My Place series.

TEN incorrectly classified Big Mouth ads

Channel TEN has been found to have incorrectly classified promotions for four of its programmes, Big Mouth, Animalia, Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Friends.

ATV10 and NEW Perth ran incorrect classification symbols with each programme, including three which were actually more restricted classifications.

In the case of Big Mouth, TEN’s Big Brother panel show, it also promoted the MA show at a time when such programmes should not be plugged.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority found that TEN ran:

Aussie animators storm(troop) the world

After Adam Elliot won an Oscar for Harvie Krumpett, Australian animators have really been taking it to the world. Films such as Happy Feet, and series like Animalia continue to do us proud.

Another Aussie animator is Justin Mettam, a 3D story artist on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars series.

For the past eight years, Mettam has been based in the US. As a 3D story artist he has responsibility for creating the cinematography from the script.

Victoria wants to be home to ABC3

The Brumby Government wants a future headquarters of an ABC3, the prospective children’s channel, to be based in Victoria.

In its submission to the Federal Government’s review of the ABC and SBS, the stage government says it should host the channel because it is already home to the Australian Children’s Television Foundation and several leading independent children’s production companies.

“Victoria has a prolific history of developing award-winning, successful children’s programming,” the submission says.

Screen Music Award winners

The 2008 APRA – AGSC Screen Music Awards were announced last night in Sydney recognising film and television composers.

Underbelly’s dark soundtrack earned seasoned composer Burkhard Dallwitz two trophies for best television theme and best music for a television series. It beat Summer Heights High, Elders and The Gruen Transfer for best theme. Losing out in best music were City Homicide, Summer Heights High and Who Do You Think You Are?
