ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards: Winners

The ASTRA 2010 Conference announced the winners of The ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards, yesterday for excellence in the promotion of subscription television.

This year there were 150 entries and 28 judges from across the subscription sector.

The winners are:

BEST ON-AIR PROGRAM PROMOTION
Awarded to the most creative and effective on-air program promotion for a single subscription television program, series or event.

- The Contender Australia Launch, FOX8. Judges comment: The Contender delivered event scale and status and broadened the appeal of the concept. It fulfilled marketing objectives with a clear effective message.

ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards: Finalists

Finalists for the ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards were announced for excellence in the promotion of subscription television.

Entries were sought from television channels, operators, production houses, media, advertising and creative agencies.

28 judges from senior subscription television executives and marketing specialists have judged the entries on the strength of the campaign strategy, implementation, results and creativity.

These awards have previously been part of the ASTRA Awards, but will be awarded at the ASTRA 2010 Conference next week while programming and talent remain part of the ASTRA Awards on June 24, 2010.

Pay Television is stepping up the presentation of its ASTRA Awards this year, shifting from a sit down dinner at Sydney’s Royal Hall of Industries to a black-tie affair at Sydney’s State Theatre.

The event will also shift from April to Thursday June 24th.

The staging of the 8th Annual ASTRA Awards will address some concerns that previous ceremonies have been a little too enthusiastically enjoyed by some of its guests, although it does begin with an intimate cocktail reception.

Peter Maddison to host Grand Designs Australia

Australian architect Peter Maddison will host Grand Designs Australia for the LifeStyle Channel.

The Aussie version of the UK series is being produced by FremantleMedia with ten episodes set for 2010.

Maddison is an award-winning architect and director of Maddison Architects Pty Limited, a practice he started in 1988. He has thirty years experience in residential and commercial work.

Returning: Football Superstar

FOX8’s reality search for an A-League player, Football Superstar, return for Series Two on Wednesday, May 27 at 7.30pm.

The 8-part series has been having playoffs around the country and returns with Brian McFadden as host with FOX Sports presenter Lee Furlong. Recently at the ASTRAs, McFadden joked, “this one’s got a brain.”

Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick will act as head judge, in a series produced for FOX8 by North One Television Australia.

On offer is a Hyundai A-League contract with the Melbourne Victory team.

Top cast for My Place, ABC children’s drama

The ABC has assembled an impressive cast for My Place, its new 13-part, half hour children’s drama series, which started shooting yesterday in Sydney.

Joining a line up of child actors  is a cast that includes: Susie Porter (East of Everything and Little Fish), Dan Wyllie (Love My Way, Underbelly), Sacha Horler (Love My Way, Grass Roots), Dan Spielman (Mary Bryant, Tom White), Russell Dykstra (Clubland, Romulus, My Father), Leon Ford (All Saints, Changi) and Hayley McElhinney (Blue Heelers, Young Lions.)

Bob the Biggest Loser

West Australian Bob Herdsman has won the fourth series of The Biggest Loser and wins $200,000 in cash.

57 year old Bob becomes the oldest-ever contestant winner after shedding a record-breaking 87.6kg, and 52.21% of his body weight -more than any contestant across four series and half of his own body weight.

“On behalf of the half that’s here it feels great!” he said.

He defeated his 27-year-old daughter-in-law Tiffany who lost 47.62% of her body weight and took home $30,000.

“We didn’t set out to beat anybody, only ourselves,” he said.

2009 AFI Awards open for business

Awards are everywhere and it barely seems like we have finished last year’s AFIs when the cycle starts once more.

The Australian Film Institute is currently seeking jurors to take part in its judging for the 2009 AFI Awards.

Jurors must be AFI members professional film or television credits. They are required for the Feature Film, Documentary, Television, Visual Effects, Short Fiction Film and Short Animation juries.

Each  jury is created with representatives across all industry crafts.

Last night in Sydney pay television’s proudest, most glamorous and most underrated all assembled for the 7th Annual ASTRA Awards -the industry’s annual trophy night.

A modest media contingent turned out to snap the faces as they walked the red carpet, trying to snaffle an interview against the noisy throng of a rock band, screaming fans and the throbbing rhythms of Stomp.
