Meet the faces of ABC3
Amberley Lobo, Kayne Tremills, Ben Crawley, Scotty Tweedie, Stephanie ‘Hex’ Bendixsen and Hannah Wang are the six lucky presenters who will become the faces of ABC3, the new ad-free children’s network.
The six were introduced to media last night by Kim Dalton, ABC TV’s Director of Television, who unveiled the new digital channel last night at the network’s Ripponlea studio.

ABC3 to launch December 4th
The ABC’s new children’s digital channel, ABC3, will launch on December 4th, according to The Age.
The date was revealed in an article on managing director Mark Scott’s appearance before a Senate hearing in Canberra yesterday.
The network will have a media launch unveiling the new channel this Thursday night.
Amongst some of the other points of interest from the hearing were:
- hosting programmes on iView for long periods after they have aired affected potential DVD sales by ABC shops.

Staff changes prepare for ABC3
In advance of ABC3 launching later this year, the ABC has announced a new organisational structure for its Children’s Department.
Executive Head of Children’s Content, Tim Brooke-Hunt, said: “The ABC is entering a most exciting period in its long history of broadcasting to Australian kids. In a few months we will launch ABC3, a channel dedicated to school-aged children, whilst expanding our offering to pre-schoolers with ABC For Kids on 2, enhancing our on-line services and maintaining our current programming on ABC1.

Bananas in Pyjamas are going 3D, with their own animated series to be produced by Southern Star Entertainment.
ABC’s Executive Head of Children’s Tim Brooke-Hunt, said: “Animating the Bananas series allows us to present this classic show in a fresh, contemporary format, designed specifically to appeal to today’s generation of young children. It also gives us the opportunity to broaden the existing world of the Bananas, while retaining their relationships to Rat and the Teddies”.

Celebrities in digital retail push
TV celebrities were hauled in for the Freeview media press conference in Sydney yesterday.
TEN News presenter Sandra Sully, SBS commentator Craig Foster and Seven Morning Show hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies and some Bananas resplendent in Pyjama were on hand as Freeview chairman Kim Dalton unveiled the first range of Freeview-compatible equipment at Dick Smith’s George St store.

ABC’s Playground site wins AIMIA prize
Despite a strong line up of interactive entries by television media at the AIMIA Awards, just one has taken out a top prize.
The ABC’s The Playground website was awarded Best Childrens entry by the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association on Friday.
The Playground offers games and interactivity on ABC children’s programming including such shows as Bananas in Pyjamas, The WotWots and In the Night Garden.

Kids switch off ABC
The ABC is losing younger viewers, says the Sydney Morning Herald, to Pay TV.
During the past four years, while the population of the mainland capitals has risen by half a million people, the average prime-time audience for free-to-air television has dropped by 220,000.
The ABC suffered its biggest loss with a group that used to be its strongest supporters – children under the age of 15. That part of the ABC’s audience across the whole day has declined by 25 per cent. The children seem to be saying bye-bye to Bananas …

At last night’s Freeview launch at Parliament in Canberra there were CEOs, stars, buses and booze. And a lil thing about digital telly too.
Network stars and bosses mingled with politicians in the Mural Hall including Spicks and Specks’ Myf Warhurst, All Saints’ Kip Gamblin, the Bananas in Pyjamas and Gladiators’ Tom Williams. Also in attendance were Underbelly’s Les Hill, Underbelly II’s Dieter Brummer, The Chaser’s Julian Morrow, and Packed to the Rafters stars George Houvardas and Hugh Sheridan, as well as Good News Week’s Paul McDermott.
