Cooking pips cars on Tuesday

Nine might have to rethink its advertisements for Top Gear touting it as Australia’s new #1 show after last night it was pipped by My Kitchen Rules.

It was a line ball tussle but Seven’s cook-off pulled 1.4m viewers ahead of Nine’s first-run roadtest on 1.38m -well down on its season premiere. Both left Bondi Rescue / The Biggest Loser in their wake (934,000 / 774,000).

Nine’s second episode of Top Gear, which had already aired on SBS, slipped to 1.15m behind NCIS on 1.36m but bettered Grey’s Anatomy on 1.04m.

Other networks battles …

Top Gear drives up 1.68m viewers

Nine’s reputedly big fee in hijacking Top Gear from SBS appears to have paid off with a huge 1.68m viewers tuning in for the new episode last night.

The show was the #1 programme for Tuesday, driving right across My Kitchen Rules (1.21m) and The Biggest Loser / Bondi Rescue (722,000 / 966,000).

With all the advertisements Top Gear fans are questioning whether the episode had been trimmed. The BBC delivers a 52 minute international version to its clients. Nine maintains it didn’t edit the show, but it certainly dumped the credits …

TV Tonight Awards 2009: The year of Shaun Micallef

The votes are in.

Readers have spoken on their best and worst television for 2009 in the third annual TV Tonight Awards.

The winners: Shaun Micallef, MasterChef and Packed to the Rafters.

Over 1000 surveys were completed this year, and there were some definite trends. Some choices were clear decisions, others were tight races.

Several “winners” were also “losers” elsewhere, showing a divided audience, and a number of populist shows proved their mettle by staying ahead of underdogs.

Shaun Micallef won both Favourite Male and Most Underrated Performer, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your …

Assault on Bondi Rescue lifesaver

Bondi Rescue Lifeguard Troy Quinlan  (pictured, far left) was assaulted on December 7th following a night out in Kings Cross.

Quinlan and his friends were trying to catch a taxi when he was king-hit by one of eight men who ambushed the group near the corner of Darlinghurst Rd and Victoria St.

Detectives say it appeared the attackers mistook Quinlan and his friends.

“It does appear it was a case of mistaken identity following an incident at a nightclub earlier in the night,” a police spokesman said.

“This bloke was simply in the wrong place …

No risk for 20-TEN

A year ago when TEN unveiled its programming for 2009 it brazenly shocked the nation when it said Big Brother would be replaced by a cooking show. And it promised other local titles including Talkin’ ’Bout Your Generation, Guerilla Gardeners, Bondi Vet and even some that never eventuated: Australia’s Hidden Genius and Undercover Boss.

Unveiling its 2010 titles last night in Melbourne, TEN programmer David Mott played it both safe and sure, only promising one new local title, the Junior Masterchef spin-off. …

Glee cast to visit Oz

In a major coup for Network TEN, ten of the cast from Glee will visit Australia in mid-September.

Set to visit our shores are Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester, pictured), Matthew Morrison (Will Shuester), Lea Michele (Rachel Berry), Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson), Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel), Kevin McHale (Artie Abrams), Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones), Mark Salling (Puck), Dianna Agron (Quinn Fabray) and Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina).

The sheer numbers of the promotional visit hot off the back of its September 9th launch in the US is very significant.

The ‘gleeks’ will travel to Melbourne and Sydney …

Meanwhile, over in the factual genre….

We’ve all seen them do it. You’re following an interesting story in your favourite factual / observational series and suddenly you are whisked away to a completely new story. Just as that starts to look interesting you’re shunted off to another one, meanwhile there’s something about to occur back in the first story. Since the success of Border Security they’re practically all doing it now.

‘Meanwhile TV’ has infiltrated so many titles in the genre, especially in commercial television. Have television producers lost faith in their ability to sustain an audience?

“It isn’t …

Logie Awards 2009: Gallery

“It’s good to be here,” said Gretel. “I have never personally won a television award.” Except for running second in a poll of TV’s most annoying host, she joked.

“This is a chance for me to say hello to you at home whom I have not seen in a long time.

“It is a little bit daunting to be back in the spotlight,” she conceded….

TEN leaves Nine the biggest loser

It will probably go down as the tightest ratings week of the year. Just 1.5% divided the three commercial networks in Week 18 of the year.

It was still Seven that again took glory with 26.7%, however the real story was the upset for second place. TEN snatched that with 25.5% over Nine’s 25.2%.

The ABC had 17.1% and SBS 5.5%.

Most significantly, TEN won the three key demographics 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54. Seven was second in each.

There was also a shake-up in “city wins”. TEN won Adelaide this week plus second place in …

Seven deals the week

One week back from the Easter break and Seven takes first place again.

Seven won with a 28.0% share ahead of Nine’s 26.1% and TEN’s 22.8%. ABC had 17.4% and SBS 5.7%.

Seven won  key demos 18-49 and 25-54 plus all cities for the week except Brisbane, which fell to Nine by 0.1%. TEN won the 16-39 demo.

In the two non rating weeks of Easter Nine and Seven tied the first week, while Seven took the second. This week when it mattered was a close race with just 1% splitting Seven and Nine …
