Where to for Rescue: Special Ops?

Nine’s newest drama Rescue: Special Ops will have its season finale on Sunday October 25th.

As well as its weekly incident to resolve, it will also see a wedding placed in jeopardy for one of the central characters.

But for Nine the stakes are much greater as it faces decisions about the future of the show.

On Sunday night the show pulled 1.02m viewers, slightly less than some of its best figures of around 1.1m. The drama, produced by Southern Star, doesn’t come cheap. Reviews have been middling, word of mouth for the …

Seven tops local content list

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has released its findings on Australian content on commercial free to air television in 2008.

It found Seven, Nine and TEN all exceeded the minimum requirement of 55% local content be aired between 6am and midnight.

Channel Seven broadcast 64% Australian content while Nine’s PBL-owned stations on the East Coast aired more than 60% Australian content. TEN just cleared the minimum averaging 56%.

Seven was the only network to increase its local content from 2007.

2008 was a strong year for local content, particularly in drama with …

A gold year for Rebecca

Last night Julie and Dave Rafter, Australia television’s favourite new mum and dad, decided to keep the baby.

At age 44 ‘Julie Rafter’ faces a number of health challenges that were laid out to her by a doctor, some of which could be life-threatening.

The episode capped off an extraordinary first season for the new Seven drama.

Less seriously, actress Rebecca Gibney, also 44, could be facing a challenge of her own, when the TV Week Logie nominations are announced next week.

Packed to the Rafters was one of the success stories of 2008, arguably …

Gallery: Making Carla Cametti, PD.

Locally made SBS series Carla Cametti, P.D is winning a following, with viewers drawn towards its “girl’s own crime stories” and a heavy European flavour in its production.

Diana Glenn continues to impress as a strong lead actress, including through her work in Satisfaction and Canal Road.

As you know, TV Tonight loves to take you behind the scenes of local productions, helping to deconstruct the making of television. Most of the time this is through direct set visits.

But in the case of the SBS drama, the network has actually done it themselves. …

Carla Cametti, PD.

Quality local dramas on SBS have underlined the importance of the role of public broadcasters. Watching East West 101, The Circuit or RAN: Remote Area Nurse is like switching on an arthouse channel. East West 101 was even made by the same producers who ambitiously made The Strip, a stark difference between creative independence via a public broadcaster versus the demands of a controlling commercial network.

Carla Cametti P.D., stars Diana Glenn (Satisfaction, Canal Road) as a private detective in an Italian clan from inner Melbourne. Her family is entrenched in crime, …

Airdate: Carla Cametti, PD.

You’ll see lots of familiar faces when SBS’ newest local drama, Carla Cametti, P.D., premieres next month.

The six part series built around a private detective in a family of Italians fuses actors from Underbelly, Satisfaction, Canal Road and Rush.

In the title role is Diana Glenn, while Vince Colosimo, Robert Mammone, Sullivan Stapleton and Nicole Da Silva also appear.

SBS has opted to premiere the season when most viewing on offer is repeats, but it also risks doing so when we are distracted by summer holidaying. It premieres Thursday January 8 at 8.30pm …

Far Canal

As previously reported Nine is scheduling its two unaired episodes of the drama series Canal Road.

But it has made an adjustment which will need to keep any remaining fans (are you out there) on their toes.

Now the last two episodes are scheduled to appear Fri Dec 5th 10:45pm and Saturday Dec 13th 10:30pm. That’s a week apart, but on different days.

Very confusing.

This bumps failed comedy series Monster House out of schedule this Friday night.

Fans of the drama series know too well the show has been bumped around the schedule, now it …

Brooke Satchwell in Mumbai terror

Actress Brooke Satchwell is in the middle of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India.

Satchwell told Nine News today she is waiting out the scene in a hotel just 250 metres away from the Taj Hotel, which is burning from the attacks. She is there with other 8 Australians, including film crew members.

Satchwell said the chaos began when she stepped outside the hotel for a cigarette, but that it was possibly a ‘luckier’ move than for some of the others in her party.

“As I stepped inside the bathroom, gunshots started to go …

Returning: Canal Road

Finally those unaired episodes of Canal Road are returning to screen.

There are two episodes of the 13 part drama that Nine hasn’t yet aired.

The first will screen at 10:30pm Saturday December 13.

Significantly, as a first run episode it will contribute to Nine’s local drama quota for 2008. Points aren’t affected by whether dramas are run in or out of ratings season, so long as they air between 5pm -11pm.

Canal Road will follow a double-dose of McLeod’s Daughters on December 13. The previous week, December 6, the rural favourite returns, but is …

Axed: The Strip

Nine has ‘axed’ The Strip, at least not renewed it for a second season, depending on how you want to word it…

The $7.8m Gold Coast crime series will not be proceeding when it ends its first series run.

“The 13 part mini-series comes to a conclusion at the end of the month,” a Nine spokesperson said.

“We are disappointed the show didn’t sustain the audience it attracted in its premiere week.

“It’s an unfortunate outcome in this highly competitive environment.”

The drama, starring Aaron Jeffery, Vanessa Gray and Frank Holden premiered to 1.45m viewers but …

Nine Strips an episode switch

Episode 4 of The Strip airs tonight in all cities except Melbourne which takes the live AFL Footy Show Grand Final from 8:30pm.

But next week Nine skips the 5th and 6th episodes in favour of Episode 7. The switch will see Melbourne viewers watching the show in the order of #3, #7, #4.
