Better late than never perhaps, but SBS has now released details of its 2008 performance and says it achieved its “best ever primetime share of people 16+ – 6.2 per cent, a modest increase from 6 per cent in 2007.”

The broadcaster cites an increase of 22 per cent in viewership in the last five years.

“This demonstrates that audiences are appreciating SBS’s commitment to and increased investment in quality Australian programming,” Managing Director Shaun Brown said.

“While audience figures are only one measure of success, the fact that SBS’s audience share has …

Gallery: Making Carla Cametti, PD.

Locally made SBS series Carla Cametti, P.D is winning a following, with viewers drawn towards its “girl’s own crime stories” and a heavy European flavour in its production.

Diana Glenn continues to impress as a strong lead actress, including through her work in Satisfaction and Canal Road.

As you know, TV Tonight loves to take you behind the scenes of local productions, helping to deconstruct the making of television. Most of the time this is through direct set visits.

But in the case of the SBS drama, the network has actually done it themselves. …

Carla Cametti, PD.

Quality local dramas on SBS have underlined the importance of the role of public broadcasters. Watching East West 101, The Circuit or RAN: Remote Area Nurse is like switching on an arthouse channel. East West 101 was even made by the same producers who ambitiously made The Strip, a stark difference between creative independence via a public broadcaster versus the demands of a controlling commercial network.

Vince out for Underbelly 2

No surprises here, Vince Colosimo is the latest Underbelly actor to rule himself out of the sequel, being prepared by Screentime for the Nine Network.

He told Moviehole his part won’t factor into the storyline of the next series.

“The next instalment is ’75 to ’85,” he said. “Then, next year, they might do ’85 to ’95 – and the character I play will come into it again. So I’m not in this next one, but if they get the all clear to do it, I’ll be in the next one”.

A large …
