Critics’ Choice 2009

With the official TV year at an end TV Tonight has turned to those who know it best, Australian TV critics & journalists, to ask them what worked, what failed, what surprised and what annoyed?

Participating in this survey were:

Melinda Houston (Sunday Age), Richard Clune (Sunday Telegraph), James Manning (Mediaweek), Nicole Brady (The Age), Erin McWhirter (Daily Telegraph), Colin Vickery (Herald Sun) and Andrew Mercado (TV Week).

BEST DRAMA
Tangle was a popular choice: “It was new, nasty and unpredictable.”
“It was another standout from the John Edwards stable and showcased the subtle …

Birth for a nation

The final week of the ratings year is over and it was a Rafters baby that defeated singing Idols, Celebrity Masterchefs, new Apprentices, Geeks and Robbie Williams. Seven enjoyed a clean sweep of Week 48, winning all 7 nights, 3 key demos and all 5 cities -it was almost a microcosm of 2009, but this year Nine has seen to it that it didn’t quite enjoy that triumph.

The Seven Network won Week 48 with 31.3% over Nine’s 26.8% and TEN’s 21.3%. The ABC had 15.2% and SBS 5.4%.

GO! had 3.1% over …

1.3m for Celebrity MasterChef

Celebrity MasterChef finished on a positive note as the night’s top show with nearly 1.3m viewers last night.

Swimmer Eamon Sullivan took out the title from Kirk Pengilly and Rachael Finch after a two hour cook-off which saw all the former contestants gathered for the final scores. The figure was a long way from the finale of the original MasterChef Australia -in fact it was a long way behind weeknight episodes in the original season’s closing weeks.

But it did improve on the weekly celebrity version and peaked at 1.73m, easily winning its …

Eamon Sullivan named Celebrity MasterChef

Swimmer Eamon Sullivan has won Celebrity MasterChef.

He defeated finalists Rachael Finch and Kirk Pengillyin the TEN reality series.

The two hour finale saw the three finalists competing in several cooking challenges.

Rachael Finch went into the final challenge as the underdog with 22 points. Her final dish netted her 24 points with a total of 46 points.

Kirk Pengilly had 32 points before the final dish with 55 points.

Eamon Sullivan also had  32 points but took 27 points to win with 59 points….

Rafters finale tops 2m

More than two million Australians tuned in for the birth of the Rafters baby last night as Channel Seven’s popular drama closed its second season.

‘Ruby Louise Rafter’ finally arrived after screaming scenes from Julie Rafter (Rebecca Gibney) in a very quintessentially Australian episode full of comedy, drama and heartfelt moments. It capped off an extraordinary run for the drama on Seven this year, regularly attracting figures of around 1.9m.

Along with Unlikely Animal Friends (1.37m) the network romped home with a 34.6% share last night, thrashing its nearest rival, Nine on 25.5%.

The …

Say bye to variety for me

The Noughties will end with a nail in the coffin of variety after Rove McManus announced he was winding down his show last Sunday. It closed a ten year chapter for the genre with a string of Logies, A-List guests and live memories to take home. Without any advance warning it also didn’t pull the kind of figures such a farewell deserved. Both the night and the week went Seven’s way for the second last week of the ratings season.

The Seven Network won Week 47 with a big 30.0% ahead of …

Reminder: Finale week

A reminder to all readers that with at least three finales coming up in the next few days TV Tonight will be logging winner results.

Australian Idol, The Apprentice Australia and Celebrity MasterChef all have finale episodes due.

Readers anywhere other than AEDT may consider holding off visiting if they have not seen episodes air, as per normal protocol at TV Tonight.

Are we there yet?

Are we there yet? Just two weeks to go until the 2009 ratings end, with a baby Rafter, a new Idol, a Celebrity MasterChef, and a first Apprentice all due. Audiences are already showing signs of switch-off as numbers diminish -either from fatigue, daylight saving, multiple entertainment choices or all three. But they are hanging on for Julie Rafter whose motherly condition ensured she was the week’s top show. And Seven again won the week.

Seven Network won with 30.1% over Nine’s 26.3% and TEN’s 19.8%. The ABC had 18.0% and SBS …

On the Orange Carpet

Friday’s Kids’ Choice Awards was a chance to throw a question (and not much more than 1) to some of television’s famous faces.

Here is a random selection answers from questions posed by TV Tonight on the Orange Carpet.

Charlie Pickering on The 7PM Project’s extra time over summer:

“Every day that we do the show we wind up having to drop stuff. So having that extra thirty minutes allows us to stretch our legs and have a bit more fun over summer.

Programming round-up

A few people have emailled about upcoming shows, many of which I have noted in other posts, but let’s do a round-up as a friendly reminder…

Survivor: Tocantins is now in double episodes on GO! on Tuesdays and triple eps on Fridays. This is to wind up the show before Survivor: Samoa airs on Nine in December. Nine has also corrected its guide to ensure the 2 hr finale will be followed by the Reunion beginning at 8:30pm Friday November 27th.
