Big Love for Željko Ivanek

Character actor Željko Ivanek makes his first appearance in tonight’s torrid episode of Big Love on SBS ONE.

Ivanek is well-known for his performances in The X Files (Roland), Homicide: Life on the Street (as prosecuting attorney Ed Danvers), Damages (Ray Fiske), Oz (Governor James Devlin), 24 (Andre Drazen), Heroes (Emile Danko), John Adams (John Dickinson) and True Blood (The Magister).

The third series of the HBO polygamy series has been its best so far, with some dynamite storylines. It surely deserves a much bigger audience.

The first series will also air on Showcase …

The Good Wife

With a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors’ Guild Award for Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife is really a no-brainer. Good luck to any TV Critic that doesn’t give this one the thumbs up.

Thankfully they needn’t be at pains to do so. This US legal drama is one of the best new shows of the season.

The wife of any leader is nearly always more dramatically-interesting territory than that of her husband. Trapped between being ’somebody’ and ‘nobody’ all at the same time is a curious limbo. Hillary Clinton won international praise …

67th Golden Globes: nominees

Rose Byrne, Simon Baker and Toni Collette were all nominated today in the Golden Globe Awards.

Their three television performances in Damages, The Mentalist and United States of Tara were the only Australian nominations in the film and television accolades chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Baker and Collette are both up for Lead Actor / Actress trophies while Byrne is recognised in the Supporting Actress category.

Leading the TV nominations this year is newcomer Glee on four nods. 30 Rock, Big Love, Damages, Dexter, Mad Men, Grey Gardens, Into the Storm and …

Nip / Tuck finale in March

The FX Network has announced final dates for Nip / Tuck in the US, to begin on January 6th and to conclude in March.

This is significantly earlier than previous suggestions it would begin later in 2010 and end in 2011.

The final batch of 10 episodes will complete the sixth season. But most Nip / Tuck fans know this has been dragging out for too long. The show has never topped its third season with the mystery of The Carver and even creator Ryan Murphy said he was moving on before eventually …

Close on Damages: “It’s the scripts”

The inimitable Glenn Close says she is doing Damages not because of a lack of film offers but because of the quality of the scripts.

She also recently starred in The Shield.

Close told London Lite: “I bristle when it’s intimated I’m doing television because I can’t get any other work. It’s just not true.

“I’ve always gone to where the best writing is and when I was given the Damages script I thought, ‘This is as good as the very best movie scripts’.

“I’m always seduced by what I think is good writing and …

CSI: NY snubs Nat Bass audition

Some Aussie actors have been lucky enough to come from near-obscurity to landing US television roles, and others who are big fish in our relatively small industry have learned there are no easy ways to open doors in America.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte says that when she turned up for an audition on CSI: New York the producers didn’t even turn on the camera.

“It was a shock to the system and a very humbling experience,” she has told news.com.au

“It’s one thing being in Australia, where a lot of people know who you …

Damages

It’s been two long years since last we saw Patty Hewes, the diabolical, terrifying lawyer played by a captivating Glenn Close in the cable drama Damages. When the series first aired in Australia on Channel Nine, it was clear this was a quality piece – alas, it struggled to find a following on a channel with a broad audience.

The non-linear narrative was a constant challenge. Flashbacks and flash forwards combined with characters doing 360 degree U-turns from white to black. It left many viewers perplexed, a risky move for any new …

Is this best week of Pay TV ever?

Is this just about the best week of subscription television ever? Maybe not, but probaby for the year.

There are several major shows and events this week, tempting us away from free to air television.

On Tuesday there’s the live 90 minute finale of Australia’s Next Top Model on FOX8 at 7:30pm.

Sarah Murdoch proudly hosts this one (will Jodhi Meares be watching?) from Luna Park, Sydney. This year the show chooses between Tahnee and Cassi.

Also on Tuesday night is the first episode of the Torchwood miniseries event, fastracked from the UK on both …

Returning: Damages

In case you missed the reference earlier, the second season of Damages will have its Australian premiere on the W Channel on Thursday July 16th.

The series leads straight out of the first season, currently screening on Friday nights.

Glenn Close, Rose Byrne and Tate Donovan all return for another knife-turning series of lies, deception, power and fraud. Once again there is a non-linear, noir-ish style to this FX drama.

This season they are joined by William Hurt (Close’s former Big Chill co-star), Marcia Gay Harden and Deadwood’s Timothy Oliphant.

It’s been a long time …
