2008-09 Production Report
Screen Australia has released the findings of its annual Production Report on the state of film and television.
Never wanting to paint a bleak picture, it manages to find optimism with a healthy state of production, if boosted by the big investment of George Miller’s Happy Feet 2 and the $100m Hollywood animation Guardians of Ga’Hoole in Sydney.
TV Tonight has taken a look at the television sector separately, and the results are still very good. While series / serials were down, mini-series (which also includes telemovies) were up.
The …
Airdate: A Model Daughter
TEN’s telemovie A Model Daughter- The Killing of Caroline Byrne will air on Wednesday, November 4 at 8.30pm.
Based on the death of the model in Sydney, 1995, it looks at her father’s battle for justice in proving that his daughter was murdered.
It was Tony Byrne’s belief that his daughter was murdered by her boyfriend Gordon Wood, chauffeur and personal assistant to stockbroker the late Rene Rivkin. His determination to bring his daughter’s killer to justice, coupled with the persistence of several journalists to keep the police investigation open, led to the …
TV’s family values
Some years ago when he was Treasurer, Peter Costello suggested Australian families should have one baby for mum, one for dad and one for the country. Maybe he should have thrown in one for television too.
The traditional, nuclear family is disappearing from primetime television. Yet TV families are amongst our most popular genres.
If you step into the fictional suburb of Erinsborough today you will find great change from its origins. Under the roofs of Ramsay Street there is an array of family groupings: married couples, children, brothers and sisters, friends, step-parents, …

ABC: Timing the Time Lord
In television programming, as in comedy, timing is everything. Marena Manzoufas is fully aware of fervent Doctor Who fans who are never satisfied with anything less than a same day & date screening of a sci-fi darling.
In the second of a two-part interview with TV Tonight, ABC’s programmer explains how equally frustrating it is to wait for the supply to deliver it to her audience.
This year, in a breakout move, the 2008 Christmas special aired in January. Whilst it still wasn’t enough to please fans, it wasn’t an ideal outcome …

Audiences flock to quality
This week the ABC delivered commercial networks a bit of a lesson as US cable series United States of Tara swooped with 1.27m viewers in a 9:30pm timeslot. It highlighted the fact that audiences will flock to supposedly niche stories, if they are accessible. Even subscription television had passed on this one, but the ABC was able to win the slot with Toni Collette.
Once again, however, it was Seven’s week, scoring a very strong 29.3% over Nine’s 24.3% and TEN’s 22.4%. The ABC had 17.6% and SBS 6.3%.
Seven won 18-49 and …
TEN loses week to Seven
There isn’t really any other way to put it. This week was TEN’s to lose.
After it set record television records with the MasterChef Australia finale its lead was superb, almost double Seven. While it was never going to maintain that distance it was left to face the reality of its core programming. Nine generally wins weeks with State of Origin’s 2m+ but TEN couldn’t take the week with a show on 3.7m.
Instead it was Seven that quietly strode through on 27.3% beating TEN’s 25.0% and Nine’s 23.4%. ABC had 16.5% and …
Secret Men’s Business
In television a second series is invariably much stronger than the first. Everybody knows what it is they’re making, the writers, the actors, the network and the audience. Roger Monk, who co-created and co-created ABC’s East of Everything with Deb Cox, knew when he was watching the first series on air that the scripts he had commenced for the second season had to be thrown out and started from scratch.
“The first series ran really smoothly but we didn’t really know what we were up against,” he told TV Tonight. “We had …
