Fringe without benefits
Q: So why would GO! bother taking out single episodes of Fringe and Eleventh Hour just to play a movie and then reschedule them next week instead? It shouldn’t really matter on GO! right? Wrong.
A: It’s the final week of ratings. As of yesterday the Nine Network and the Seven Network were tied on exactly 27.9% each in the 18-49 demographic for the survey year.
Of course, that includes both GO! and 7TWO in the equation, which have only both been on air together for a handful of weeks. But winning that …
GO! adjusts for school holidays
Nine recently expressed some frustration over classification limitations it’s tackling since the arrival of GO!
During school holidays, Free to Air networks are restricted in what they can show during the daytime for M rated programmes.
It’s an issue that all networks face, and have for some time.
During September it will impact on several shows intended for repeat.
Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe and Eleventh Hour won’t be replayed on Thursday Sept 10 and Gossip Girl and Moonlight won’t be repeated on Friday Sept 11. If anybody cares Neighbours at War is also out …
The cancelled list
As the US Fall Season nears it’s time to take stock of the shows in the US that are not moving forward (including two Aussie adaptations).
Whilst many of us are up to speed on most of these, sometimes one or two escape out attention, and others kinda never get cancelled but remain in permanent hiatus.
For the record here is the list of those that are no more:
ABC has cancelled Cupid, Dirty Sexy Money, Eli Stone, In the Motherhood, Kyle XY, Life on Mars, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who, Surviving Suburbia, and The …
Wire in the Blood set for US clone
Not content with Wire in the Blood: USA (which screened this week on ABC2), CBS and DreamWorks Television are to adapt the original series for the US.
CSI: Miami writer Ildy Modrovich will write the pilot, with Terry McDonough (Breaking Bad, Californication and Eleventh Hour) set to direct. Significantly, McDonough has also directed several episodes of the UK series.
Robson Green who stars in the series, is producer of the UK series via his production company Coastal Productions. Sandra Jobling, a producer on the original ITV series, is on board as an executive …
“Survivors ready? GO!”
From today GO! begins its signal on digital televisions, ahead of its ’soft-launch’ on Sunday night with an array of tasty titles.
TV Tonight spoke to Les Sampson, Nine’s Network Director of Multichannels about its programming.
GO! is structured similar to a subscription TV channel with ‘block’ programming from 3:30pm – 12am, which is repeated again the next day. The SD channel has been carefully programmed so as not to cannibalise Nine and to skew towards younger demographics.
“The model is designed so that we get maximum use of the available audience,” says Sampson.
“At …

Thank God for laughter
In gloomy times we just want to laugh. On almost every front, it is local content -and especially light entertainment- that continues to resonate with Australians. Week 21 saw another win by the Seven Network as TEN continued a positive run and Nine relied on a glossy drama series to keep its ship on course.
Seven won with a 27.9% share ahead of Nine’s 26.0% and TEN’s 23.4%. The ABC had 16.9% and SBS 5.9%.
TEN won key demos 16-39, 18-49 and Seven took out 25-54. Seven won all cities except Sydney, which …
Returning: Missing Persons Unit. Gone: Eleventh Hour. Bumped: Underbelly
More changes from Nine Inc. indicate Eleventh Hour is to go, replaced on Monday June 1st by the return of Missing Persons Unit at 9:30pm.
On Tuesdays, the Underbelly Uncut repeats from series one are removed to be replaced by movies, Wedding Crashers (2005) with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan.
Underbelly moves to Mondays in Sydney and Brisbane at 10:30pm Monday June 1st while Melbourne (and other ‘AFL states’) have Footy Classified. Melbourne is still constrained by only being able to air 5 (edited) episodes anyway.
This leaves CSI: NY out of schedule on …
Cancelled: Without a Trace, Privileged, Eleventh Hour.
More dire news from the US with several more shows meeting their ‘natural’ end (or not) including a biggie, Without a Trace.
CBS reportedly approved Numb3rs at the expense of Without A Trace because it’s less expensive to produce, according to Michael Ausiello.
The Anthony LaPaglia show has been running since 2002, but with that pesky global economic crisis there was talk both it and Cold Case were on notice due to their price tags, however the latter has been renewed.
CBS has also dropped Eleventh Hour and renewed How I Met Your Mother, …
TEN leaves Nine the biggest loser
It will probably go down as the tightest ratings week of the year. Just 1.5% divided the three commercial networks in Week 18 of the year.
It was still Seven that again took glory with 26.7%, however the real story was the upset for second place. TEN snatched that with 25.5% over Nine’s 25.2%.
The ABC had 17.1% and SBS 5.5%.
Most significantly, TEN won the three key demographics 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54. Seven was second in each.
There was also a shake-up in “city wins”. TEN won Adelaide this week plus second place in …
Decision time for US dramas
America is fast approaching decision time for a number of series that air in Australia.
Not all shows that haven’t been renewed yet are in jeopardy: For such series as CBS’ How I Met Your Mother, which traditionally gets picked up at the last minute, and ABC’s Ugly Betty, the orders are just a formality.
But that can’t be said for a dozen or so other series anxiously awaiting their fate.
CBS has the most, including a quartet of long-running procedurals — Without a Trace, Cold Case, Numb3rs and The Unit — along with …
