Lost’s Michael Emerson sure has come a long way.

It’s unlikely he could have ever conceived of landing an Emmy Award when he was shooting this 1992 training video for prison staff.

Dustin Hoffman for HBO drama

Dustin Hoffman will follow a growing parade of film stars who appear in television series as a crooked horseracing shark in HBO’s upcoming drama, Luck.

It is his first major television role in 40 years.

The series by Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Crime Story) and David Milch (NYPD Blue, Deadwood) centres on the worlds of horseracing and gambling told through a diverse group of characters surrounding a racetrack.

Jeff Probst back for more Survivor

Immunity is back up for grabs on Survivor as Jeff Probst signs on for two more seasons of the hit CBS reality show.

Probst confirmed via his Twitter feed, “I’ll be back snuffing torches for two more seasons.”

He will also continue to serve as an executive producer on the show.

CBS recently renewed the series for two more cycles, but Probst was yet to be confirmed.

The Emmy winning host has previously renewed contract extensions for only one year instead of two.

Vale: Frances Reid

Frances Reid, best known for her long-running role as ‘Alice Horton’ on Days of our Lives has die in Los Angeles, aged 95.

Reid played the role of the martriarch over four decades, from the first episode in 1965 until her final appearance in 2007.

NBC said in a statement the network “is deeply saddened by the passing of Frances Reid. She was a true icon of the daytime genre and while we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her long life and the tremendous talent she shared with her generations of fans. …

The critically acclaimed US cable drama Breaking Bad will have its Free to Air premiere at 9:30pm Friday January 22nd on ABC2.

SBS will screen the acclaimed HBO miniseries John Adams next month.

The series on the second US President stars Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson and Rufus Sewell.

Vale: Edward Woodward

British actor Edward Woodward, known for his TV series Callan and The Equalizer and film roles including The Wicker Man and Breaker Morant, has died. He was 79.

He died in a hospital in Cornwall after an illness, said his agent.

His most recent roles were in East Enders and The Bill.

TEN drama exec wins scriptwriting award

Channel TEN drama executive Claire Tonkin has won the Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award for an original script written by a non-US citizen younger than 30.

She will will be presented with the Award at the International Emmy World Television Festival in New York City in November.

Entrants for this contest were asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English-language television drama script for a family audience.

Her unpublished screenplay Me and Mine, a drama about the ramifications of adoption and finding a place in the family, will be read by actors …

It was at the Golden Globes in 2004 that most of America sat up and said “Who?” when The Office swept aside its traditional comedies. Now Ricky Gervais  is set to give back some love as the host of the 67th Annual Golden Globes Awards.
