Once again immunity is back up for grabs

Jeff Probst this year won the inaugural Emmy for the Most Outstanding Reality Host, probably due to his years in the genre and the show being at the top of its game for so many years.

Probst is also king when it comes to building the drama and describing the state of play throughout challenges. It helps to interview the players at Tribal Council, with his years of experience gauging the success of the individuals and groups he is the perfect storyteller for reality viewers.

But Jeff sure loves his script too. Some …

Dexter renewed for two more seasons

Showtime has picked up a fourth and fifth season of Dexter, at 12 episodes each.

Production on season four is set to begin in L.A. in the US spring.

The third series premiere drew 1.2m viewers in the US last month, no doubt boosted by its (edited) screening on CBS during the writers strike. It also nabbed some Emmy nominations, including for Michael C. Hall as Most Outstanding Actor.

In Australia the third series will air on Showcase in January. TEN is likely to screen a second season in 2009, but no confirmation just …

John Adams

Ahh the period miniseries, we love it so.

It’s such a meeting of television and film, with its romantic settings, elaborate costumes, hundreds of extras and grand themes. Shows like Roots, Against the Wind, Water Under the Bridge, Jessica, and The Thorn Birds were marvels of the small screen.

We used to do them so well in Australia, too. With the exception of Underbelly, the miniseries barely sees the light of day anymore here, unless you count those that try to pass themselves off as a miniseries, purely to abet funding.

But America can …

US crits: Judy Davis “spectacular”

The new series of The Starter Wife, the miniseries that was shot in Queensland, has just nabbed good reviews in the US.

Produced for the USA Network, it again features Judy Davis who won an Emmy for her role, is being lauded by critics. Miranda Otto is absent this time around, probably because she went over to the short-lived Cashmere Mafia.

Meanwhile, Hollywood loves our Judy, who has no less than ten Emmy nominations, and three wins. Add to that another 6 Golden Globe and 2 Oscar nominations.

Here’s a sample of what they’ve …

30 CRock. Seven bumps Tina Fey finale.

Fans of 30 Rock are about to be disappointed with word that Seven has bumped the season finale due tonight by one week.

Instead it will air a Seven News special on the financial woes in the US at 11:30pm AEST.

Seven is planning a news special hosted by Chris Reason which will cross live to the opening of Wall Street. Michael Pascoe will be in studio for analysis.

The switch is a shame given the finale, “Cooter”, guest stars Matthew Broderick and won Tina Fey an Emmy for series comedy writing just last …

The Mentalist

Simon Baker (without the hyphenated “Denny”) is a cool customer in The Mentalist.

As Patrick Jane, he can walk into a crime scene and see things the cops miss. As a phony, celebrity psychic, he knows all the tricks in the book. The opening scene shows Jane working his stuff when a grieving mother and father shed tears for their murdered daughter to the media. He knows something more is goin’ on. In this scene, Baker displays an unassuming confidence that no doubt won him the role. It’s a deftly-directed opener.

Once the …

New, local content wins Seven week

It was the week the “Prince of Darkness” descended upon Nine, the Imparja takeover of NTD9 inched closer, Seven lost an appeal relating to a children’s court case and lost a packet in the financial freefall, TEN signalled the return of boxing only to have its promoter caught up in a drug arrest, two networks fight over the contracts of one presenter, ACMA cancelled a community broadcasting license while a leak led to a Federal Police raid, the Government introduced a bill to firm the switch to digital, TEN turned off …

Returning: Mad Men

The second season of the stylish, critical darling Mad Men will air on the Movie Extra channel in December.

It premieres 9:30pm Sunday December 14.

The series set in the smoky, executive rooms of Madison Avenue’s advertising agents in the 1960s was a big winner at the Emmys this week, defeating Dexter, Damages, Boston Legal, Lost and House. It also scored a writing award.

Previously the series has won Golden Globes including Best Drama and Best Actor in a dramatic series. Add to that WGA wins and SAG nominations, it isn’t hard to see …
