2010: SBS looks beyond Top Gear

Next Monday night SBS bids farewell to Top Gear for the final time.

The show drives off to Nine after a ferocious acquisition battle last year that SBS lost due to being outbid.

But the network is keen to remind us it was just one hour of television a week, and that it still has plenty to bring its “six billion stories” theme to life.

This year SBS has the World Cup exclusive, a third series of East West 101, Eurovision in Oslo, more Mad Men, Skins, Inspector Rex, Entourage and Shameless.

Over summer, the …

Returning: Entourage

Entourage’s sixth season will hit screens in January.

Vince (Adrian Grenier) is back in the fast lane, as he prepares for his driving test and the premiere of Gatsby, his new movie directed by Martin Scorsese. His manager Eric (Kevin Connolly) is looking to expand his management business and move out of the boys’ bachelor pad. Vince’s half-brother, Drama (Kevin Dillon), is still struggling with his own acting career, living in the shadow of Vince’s success and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), who’s now dating actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, seeks out Vince’s high-powered aggressive agent …

Returning: Entourage

More Entourage is about to return to SBS ONE.

The guys are back from New York and Ari is already pushing a commercial project, Aquaman, at Vince but he isn’t buying it. Eric has an official title now, but when he has to make a “sex date” with Kristen, his status is questioned. Turtle is cranky about his new job and takes multi-tasking to a new chaotic level.

The second season will screen later on SBS this time, at 10:55pm Mondays from December 14th.

Top Gear loss “not the be-all and end-all”

TV Tonight continues its interviews with key executives in television. Following on from last week’s interviews with Seven, ABC, TEN and Nine, today the spotlight turns to SBS Director of Content Matt Campbell.

The last two weeks have not been without their challenges for Campbell, who learned the fate of Top Gear, a programme he had taken a punt on many years ago when no other network would touch it.

Having spent a lot of time trying to convince the BBC it should be staying at its natural home, he admits the loss …

Variety back on the box

Australian viewers sent a clear message to television executives this week: they want variety back on the box. Over two million viewers cheered for Hey Hey the Reunion on Nine, which demonstrated a remarkable ability to recapture its magic, with many declaring it a return to old-fashioned entertainment. So smooth was the return, it will go down in TV history as one of television’s great reunion specials. Week 40 was a particularly brutal fight in television with a string of new shows launching. By the time the bell rang, Nine had …

Nine wins the week

Having two and a half channels proved a winner for Nine in Week 37. Seven’s lack of a digital channel lost it the week by the slimmest of margins to Nine -just 0.2%. The extra share from GO!, which is added to Nine’s primary share,  helped it win a week in which its biggest audience was 1.33m, a far cry from figures on Seven.

Nine won with 28.1% over Seven’s 27.9% and TEN’s 20.8%. The ABC had 17.3% and SBS 5.8%.

Nine won all three demo groups 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54. In Total …

Murder’s hit on commercial networks

Renewed and emerging hits were evident on the box last week as networks prepare to unveil fresh titles upon us once more. The biggest in the bunch was ABC’s Midsomer Murders which increased its lead to 1.48m and showed commercial networks how to win a traditional Sunday audience. Nine appears to have timed it right with Money for Jam nabbing 1.32m and the AFL passed 1.1m for TEN and 1m viewers for Seven.

But in Week 36 once again Seven won Total People with 27.8% just ahead of Nine’s 27.3% and TEN’s …
