Community TV wins digital breakthrough

It has been a long, hard-fought campaign -but the Community Television sector sees a light at the end of the digital tunnel.

The Rudd Government has finally delivered it the news it has been seeking: a switch to digital broadcasting.

The Government will temporarily allocate vacant spectrum, previously known as Channel A, to the community broadcasting sector, allowing Community TV stations C31 in Melbourne, TVS in Sydney, QCTV in Brisbane and Channel 31 Adelaide to simulcast their services until the switch to digital-only television in capital cities in 2013. A new community licensee …

Rove: Upcoming guests

Is Rove about to interview his missus?

Updated: Tasma Walton is guest on the show this Sunday. Maybe the questions will be “Could you pick up some milk on the way home from City Homicide?,” “What did you do with my favourite shirt dammit?” or “If I interviewed you on Rove would people say it was totally incestuous?” Probably.

Of course, McManus has always been fiercely protective of his private life. Since they wed maybe there is less need to maintain it.

Turns out Tasma Walton will be talking about her debut novel, “Heartless.”

Other …

Ten years with Rove

Back in the late 90s it was Channel Nine employee Rob Brearley who first brought Rove McManus to the attention of director Craig Campbell.

“Rob saw Rove on Channel 31 and kept leaving me VHS tapes on my desk,” Campbell tells TV Tonight. “And I never got to watch them because of my workload. Finally I put one on and said ‘wow’ and watched another and another.”

That was more than ten years ago. Campbell, who now manages Roving Enterprises with McManus, was working at Channel Nine at the time.

Brearley started in the …

Hamish and Andy on Leno

Hamish & Andy are set to make a guest appearance on tonight’s episode of  The Jay Leno Show, (hmmm did Rove have anything to do with this?).

The boys are currently trekking 5,000 kms from Miami to LA on their American Caravan of Courage tour.

Appearing on the same show are Robin Williams and Miley Cyrus and Friday night guests include Halle Berry, Bruce Hornsby and Eric Clapton.

It airs at 7.30pm tonight and replays 2 hrs later on The Comedy Channel….

Airdate: Hamish & Andy’s American Caravan of Courage

The first of two 2009 Hamish & Andy specials will air 7:30pm Thursday September 10th.

In Hamish & Andy’s American Caravan of Courage the boys will hit the road in the USA, travelling 5000kms from Miami to L.A in their trusty RV – the Abra-Van Lincoln.

Seems to be a lot of USA travels on the box lately, with Stephen Fry on ABC1 and another Jamie Oliver series yet to air on TEN, Jamie’s American Roadtrip.

Hamish & Andy have previously fronted specials for TEN including Hamish & Andy Re-Gifted in which they towed …

Gallery: EJ Whitten Legends Game

AFL ‘performer’ Bryan “Strauchanie” Strauchan went from hero to zero in the EJ Whitten Legends Game last night at Ethihad Stadium. After being awarded ‘man of the match’, kicking 3 goals (including the winning goal) he was sidelined at the end of the game by an ankle injury.

So dramatic was his fall that most on the field and in the commentary weren’t sure whether it was all part of an act.

But it was no stunt. Strauchanie had to be helped from the field.

“It could be the end of a great career. …

Random acts of carpet-ness

TV Tonight waded throught a non-stop cavalcade of stars (who you can see here) on the Logies Red Carpet, eager for some worthwhile news and tidbits. It was hard going.

But here’s a few random quotes, some serious, others self-deprecating. Enjoy working out which was which!

DEAN GEYER on trying his luck in LA: “I just got back from the US. I spent 3 months there doing auditions and meetings, getting to know the vibe of the town I guess. I auditioned for 20 shows. Within the first week I was auditioning. …

Logie stars in ‘desperate’ dash for Gold

Tonight, you’ll see Adam Hills handing out how-to-vote Logie flyers in Bourke Street Mall. Hills’ Gold campaign is steered by fake ABC publicists.

The scenes form part of the specially-prepared clips for the Gold Logie nominees.

Each clip will humorously depict publicists from four networks while the 8 nominees cheerfully send up their own persona.

The ABC publicists will resemble university students wearing “Kevin 07″ style t-shirts that plug “Denton 09 / Hills 09.”

Ian Smith plays it up as phony TEN publicists attempt to create a viral video for his Gold push. TEN’s team …

Returning: Rove

Rove and co are back bright and early this year, from 9pm Sunday February 8th.

Now in his ninth year on TEN, McManus brings back his regulars from 2008: Hamish & Andy, Dave Hughes, Ryan Shelton, Carrie Bickmore and of course Pete Helliar.

The first show will featue Justin Long (Ed) & Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love) from the film “He’s Just Not That Into You”, Miranda Kerr and Sneaky Sound System with a performance of “16”.

On February 15th it’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural, Grey’s Anatomy) & Malin Ackerman from the movie ‘The Watchmen’, …

Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?

There’s a lot to be said for simple formats, and this ‘kid-size Millionaire’ format works effortlessly well under school teacher Rove McManus. It gets a big elephant stamp for being the cheeriest pupil in the class without overdoing it, aiming too high or outstaying its welcome.

This year there are another five kids (like Skins the last lot were dumped when they got too old -show biz is tough). They all come bounding into class waving and high-fiving. Ok, maybe they’re overdoing it here. The contestant also runs in waving. Ok we …
