Renewals: Glee, The Middle, Cougar Town, Modern Family

A number of new shows have had renewals in the US, proceeding to their second seasons.

The are Glee on FOX and The Middle, Cougar Town and Modern Family on ABC.

As a result each of our commercial networks gets at least one green light.

Glee will also add three new cast members, which it will solicit from a nationwide talent search. The hunt will include both professional and amateur performers between the ages of 16-26.

The three comedy renewals for ABC contrasts with the cancellation of Hank starring Kelsey Grammer. There is no decision …

Hank gets yanked

Kelsey Grammer has just lost another comedy series with ABC cancelling Hank, in which he plays a Wall Street executive who loses his job and reconnects with his small-town family.

The show will stop production after wrapping up at episode 10.

Just five episodes have aired in the US where it aired as the only traditional sitcom amid single-camera series.

But neither critics nor audiences warmed to the show.

In Australia it is one of Nine’s acquisitions, which might now have to re-think whether to shift the show to the summer season (and it may …

Modern Family, Cougar Town & The Middle picked up

As expected ABC comedies Modern Family, Cougar Town, and The Middle have all received full seasons.

All three shows picked up are part of the network’s all-new Wednesday ‘comedy block.’

The network has had some difficulty with its new comedies recently, but these titles are outperforming the averages last year for Pushing Daisies as well as the drama Private Practice.

Modern Family will air in Australia on TEN while Cougar Town, starring Courtney Cox, is with Seven and The Middle with Nine.

No word yet for its other new shows: FlashForward, Hank, Eastwick, and The …

Nine pins revival on new series

Nine may not be having the best of times lately, but it has several new shows to screen before the end of the year, and it will surely need them to take on its rivals.

They include the premiere of the local adaptation of The Apprentice featuring Mark Bouris and the next season of Aussie Ladette to Lady (pictured).

There is also a local version of Secret Millionaire in which wealthy folk mingle unknown amongst deserving groups in a bid to be philanthropic.

Nine picks up V remake

Channel Nine has picked up the V remake as part of its output deal. As many readers will remember, Nine and sci-fi have not been good primetime bedmates lately, with the Fringe experience still raw in the minds of many fans of the genre.

Nine also picks up Eastwick, the spin-off from The Witches Of Eastwick, Past Life (with former Home and Away actor Nic Bishop) and the Jerry Bruckheimer dramas The Forgotten, Miami Trauma, Hank (Kelsey Grammer’s new comedy), and Middle, starring Patricia Heaton.

Cancelled: The Unit, Sam Who, According to Jim.

More news of cancelled shows to emerge from the US includes The Unit and According to Jim (it made it this far because?).

Medium has been dropped by NBC but is still a possibility of heading to CBS. Maybe Patricia Arquette can forsee her fate?

FOX may also pick up My Name is Earl, which was also let go.

ABC cancelled Samantha Who, after the show couldn’t slash its budget deep enough to make a third-season pickup work.

Networks are currently revealing their Fall slates, which sees ABC offering a new two-hour comedy block on …
