2010 Logies: Who didn’t make the cut already?

Sarah Wilson was Presenter on the highest rating show in 2009 -but it wasn’t enough to land her on the shortlist for 2010 Logie Nominations.

The Masterchef host is now out of the race for Best Presenter and Gold Logie before the race even begins. But she is in good company.

Yesterday’s list of possible contenders published by TV Week again utilised a voting system it has employed in recent years: an individual numerical code for each actor, actress and presenter as a way of facilitating the results. It contrasts with a historical …

TV Tonight Awards 2009: The year of Shaun Micallef

The votes are in.

Readers have spoken on their best and worst television for 2009 in the third annual TV Tonight Awards.

The winners: Shaun Micallef, MasterChef and Packed to the Rafters.

Over 1000 surveys were completed this year, and there were some definite trends. Some choices were clear decisions, others were tight races.

Several “winners” were also “losers” elsewhere, showing a divided audience, and a number of populist shows proved their mettle by staying ahead of underdogs.

Shaun Micallef won both Favourite Male and Most Underrated Performer, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your …

Critics’ Choice 2009

With the official TV year at an end TV Tonight has turned to those who know it best, Australian TV critics & journalists, to ask them what worked, what failed, what surprised and what annoyed?

Participating in this survey were:

Melinda Houston (Sunday Age), Richard Clune (Sunday Telegraph), James Manning (Mediaweek), Nicole Brady (The Age), Erin McWhirter (Daily Telegraph), Colin Vickery (Herald Sun) and Andrew Mercado (TV Week).

BEST DRAMA
Tangle was a popular choice: “It was new, nasty and unpredictable.”
“It was another standout from the John Edwards stable and showcased the subtle …

Where to for Rescue: Special Ops?

Nine’s newest drama Rescue: Special Ops will have its season finale on Sunday October 25th.

As well as its weekly incident to resolve, it will also see a wedding placed in jeopardy for one of the central characters.

But for Nine the stakes are much greater as it faces decisions about the future of the show.

On Sunday night the show pulled 1.02m viewers, slightly less than some of its best figures of around 1.1m. The drama, produced by Southern Star, doesn’t come cheap. Reviews have been middling, word of mouth for the …

The Secret Millionaire

If you were to take a snapshot of Nine’s schedule there’s a millionaire looking for an apprentice to join his financial advisory company at one end of the week, and now millionaires giving away money to the needy at the other.

Somewhere in between there is a television network laden with debt, cost cutting and a few high-profile stars on million dollar salaries too. There have also been a few shows lately where big wads of cash have been dished out to reality winners of low-rating TV formats. If you look very …

2.1m as Hey Hey thumps MasterChef

Hey Hey the Reunion soared to a huge 2.16m viewers for its two and a half hours last night, thrashing Celebrity MasterChef’s 1.35m viewers.

The nostalgic show gave Nine a whopping 40.0% share, almost double Seven’s 21.8% and TEN’s 20.8% share.

Preliminary figures, which are not yet adjusted for its extra 30 minute overrun, showed The Apprentice Australia, originally slated for 10pm, showed another 953,000 watching Nine from 10 – 11pm. Half of that was for Hey Hey’s extra 30 minutes.

Nine’s reunion show blew the opposition out of the water. Other shows to …

The Apprentice Australia

There are a couple of moments in The Apprentice Australia where businessman Mark Bouris buzzes his secretary in his foyer to tell her to send in his 12 candidates, all vying for the opportunity to be employed.

The young blonde lady looks up from her laptop on which she has been quietly tapping away and gives the waiting dozen the directive. Around the slick reception room everything looks fake. Behind her desk there are no drawers, cabinets, paperwork or anything remotely real. I’m not even convinced she’s even entering anything on her …

Perfect couple. Perfect silence.

On Wednesday night Nine dubbed Gemma and Raf Australia’s Perfect Couple, giving them a cool $210,000 for their efforts.

On Thursday you could have heard a pin drop.

For the second time this year a reality grand final on Nine was almost universally ignored -not just by media, but by the network itself.

It is customary with most big TV finales to issue a Press Release to media, talking up the fact that the network has just ‘changed somebody’s life’ with a big injection of cash accompanied with lots of lovely adjectives. Usually there …

Rumours of more cuts at Nine

The Daily Telegraph reports that private equity firm CVC, which owns PBL Media, has ordered more cost cutting at Channel Nine.

CEO David Gyngell is said to be “bracing” for more raids on Nine’s budget in the vicinity of about $20 million.

The newspaper notes senior staffers on $300,000-plus contracts were to be “first in the firing line” of PBL’s John Rowsthorne.

Maybe those big cash giveaways on homeMADE and Australia’s Perfect Couple didn’t help this month’s ledgers.

Nine cuts Australia’s Perfect Couple in half

Nine has moved on its under-performing reality series Australia’s Perfect Couple, by cutting it from 60 minutes to just 30, effective immediately.

Last week the show managed just 672,000 viewers.

From this week the show will air at 8pm following (another) repeat of (another) Two and a Half Men.

Nine still has 3 more eps of Couple to go. Strategically Nine’s trimming the episode avoids the use of the word “axed.”

Couple has also sought to re-package the show with advertisements featuring laughing elderly couples reminiscing about married life, none of whom have appeared in …

Seven cooking up reality rival

Seven is reportedly pursuing its own reality cooking show, following the stellar success of TEN’s MasterChef, according to B&T Today.

A Seven executive confirmed it will launch something competitive in the market. After 3.74m viewers tuned in, who should be surprised by this news? Let’s hope the copycat isn’t as dire as Make me a Supermodel was to Australia’s Next Top Model (so far no supermodel has yet emerged from Seven’s show either).

Meanwhile Nine’s new Coles-sponsored The Great Aussie Cook Off is intended as a daytime show. But the …
