Vale: Peter Graves

Peter Graves, best known as the cool team leader of Mission: Impossible, has died aged 83.

Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, about a week shy of his 84th birthday, his publicist said.

The solidly-spoken Graves appeared in dozens of films and television shows in a career of nearly 60 years but it was his role as Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in the long-running spy series that is most remembered.

The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 …

House tops Timeshifted

Top Gear’s premiere episode rose from 1.68m viewers to 1.77m viewers after Consolidated figures were released for Week 7. That meant 86,000 had Timeshifted the show within the next 7 days, boosting its status as the #1 show of the week.

But the biggest rises went to House (up 135,000) and The Good Wife (up 100,000) against One Day Cricket.

NCIS also gained 88,000 -enough to see it move from #5 for the week to #3.

Drama continues to be the big winner in Timeshifting, with extra gains for Grey’s Anatomy (Ep 1, 97,000 …

Dermot Mulroney for Rockford Files remake

Film star Dermot Mulroney will become television’s new Jim Rockford in the revamped Rockford Files.

The new Jim Rockford is described as “slightly crumpled, wry humored, cynical, world weary, compassionate when it’s called for and easily irritated by morons.”

His troubled past includes includes doing some time as a convict and as a cop.

House creator David Shore has adapted the new version, with Steve Carell to serve as an Executive Producer.

It is Mulroney’s first starring television role.

Late night Timeshifting

Changes to Ratings data are certainly creating new ways to learn how we watch TV, as well as networks finding new ways to canvas their shows to media.

This week both TEN and Seven have drawn upon Consolidated figures to alert media to increases in shows.

House (Jan 31) picked up an extra 144,000 viewers across the week while Brothers and Sisters (Feb 1) netted an additional 72,000.

Timeshifting is still a new dynamic to ratings results, but numbers in a week’s time will be far more interesting when they reflect official survey figures.

TEN improves with Consolidated ratings

While more than 2.4m Australian viewers were glued to their screens watching the Federer v Murray match last week, 144,000 viewers were recording House to watch at a later time.

In Consolidated figures released for Sunday January 31st, TEN’s shows gained extra boosts of up to some 14%.

The OzTAM ratings system now tracks timeshifted (Consolidated) ratings amongst its viewing panel. A programme can now pick up extra viewers if it is watched within 7 days of its broadcast.

Traditional morning ratings are now known as Overnight results.

2.3m watch Federerer v Murray

The Men’s Final of the Australian Open delivered the first kingsize audience of the year, as 2.35m viewers watched the game from Rod Laver Arena.

It served up a 39.7% share to the network, trouncing its nearest competitors: Nine on 23.4% and TEN on 22.9%.

The match more than doubled its competition too.

TEN had to settle on 1.16m for both The Biggest Loser and So You Think You Can Dance Australia -down from its 1.3m premiere in 2009. At least they had a solid retention on a tough night. New House came in …

Jennifer Morrison back in the House

After exiting House last year, actress Jennifer Morrison (‘Allison Cameron’) will be seen back in the medical drama in the show’s sixth season.

EW.com coyly reports the details are “too spoilery to reveal” and wonders whether she will film her part before previews of a Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker” or film them on her day off, being a Monday. That’s a punishing schedule…

Meanwhile Jesse Spencer features a lot more this season, noting “Season 6 has been awesome. They’ve been writing some really good stuff for me. It’s been pretty …

Sci-Fi fans turn on TEN

In the dying days of 2009, TEN made a programming amendment that saw two of its US shows, Supernatural and Stargate: Universe, dumped from Mondays and replaced with movie repeats.

Since that time, Sci-Fi and Horror fans have been relentless in their anger at the network.

Neither show was rating well enough to stay on air, even in the less competitive summer season. SGU only had three weeks on air, after a successful Fastracking on the SciFi Channel. The long-running Supernatural, which had nearly a three month delay from its US season premiere, …
