Lockie Leonard sale to Disney

Channel Nine children’s series Lockie Leonard has been sold to Disney XD and will premiere in the US in June. The US channel is aimed at boys aged 6 – 14.

The Logie-winning series based on Tim Winton books, follows Lockie (Sean Keenan) as he navigates his way through the intense experiences of being a teenager, and is set against the surf coast of Albany, WA.

2008-09 Production Report

Screen Australia has released the findings of its annual Production Report on the state of film and television.

Never wanting to paint a bleak picture, it manages to find optimism with a healthy state of production, if boosted by the big investment of George Miller’s Happy Feet 2 and the $100m Hollywood animation Guardians of Ga’Hoole in Sydney.

TV Tonight has taken a look at the television sector separately, and the results are still very good. While series / serials were down, mini-series  (which also includes telemovies) were up.

Lockie Leonard wraps in Albany

The shooting of a television series in regional Australia can be a big deal, providing much work and income to local economies. East of Everything, Sea Patrol, Bed of Roses and Dirt Game are a few recent series to have used regional locations.

Channel Nine’s Lockie Leonard has generated more than $4.5 million for the city’s of Albany, in southern Western Australia. This week it finishes its second series after filming for the past five-and-a-half months.

The first series (pictured), also shot in Albany, picked up both Logie and AFI Awards.

Tassie dreams of kids’ TV

Looks like Tasmania is hoping to increase its output of children’s television programming with the announcement of a special initiative between Screen Tasmania and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF).

For many years it is Victoria that has led the way with the lucrative children’s genre, thanks largely to producers such as Jonathan M. Shiff’s Elephant Princess plus Crawford’s The Saddle Club, while Queensland has picked up pace with Animalia, WA had Lockie Leonard and Sydney is busy with the ABC’s My Place series.

Stormworld to light up 2009

Following on from the success of Lockie Leonard, the Nine Network is producing a new children’s drama in Western Australia, Stormworld.

Partnering with Canada and Singapore the live-action 26×30′ series follows two teenage friends, Jason and Lee, who are transported to a parallel universe.
