Vale: Corey Haim

Former 1980s heartthrob and actor Corey Haim, best known from the movie The Lost Boys, has died at the age of 38.

Haim (pictured, right) died of a suspected accidental overdose, found unresponsive at an apartment near Burbank, police said. His mother was at the home at the time.

The actor, who has struggled with drug addiction, had recently tried his best to get himself back on Hollywood’s A-list, but had predominantly worked on several low budget and straight-to-video films. His films included Busted, Demolition High, Watchers and Murphy’s Romance.

He also appeared in …

Magic set to return to Merlin

Attention Merlin fans, you won’t have to wait much longer.

TV Tonight understands the second season is not far away now.

No airdate just yet, but it shouldn’t be too much longer.

The fantasy series was a surprise hit for TEN last year.

The second series will include appearances from Mackenzie Crook, Sarah Parrish and Charles Dance.

White Collar update

TEN is already making adjustments to its schedule in the lead up to the start of official ratings.

White Collar will no longer return at 9:30pm on Friday February 5th.

Instead it will be replaced with a repeat of NCIS. Whether it resumes on Fridays once ratings begin remains to be seen.

A Merlin repeat is also out at 6:30pm Saturday February 6th with Star Wars: Episode II – Attack Of The Clones bumped forward an hour instead.

Revenge Of The Sith now follows at 9:35pm.

True Horror

If you love a good horror yarn, then you should probably skip True Horror, a 3 part documentary series coming up on SBS.

At least, skip the first chapter, “Werewolves” which airs this Sunday night. If the first instalment is anything to go by, I won’t be back for the next two on “Frankenstein” and “Dracula.” Not to be confused with the True Horror series narrated by actor Richard Head (Little Britain, Merlin, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), this is essentially a drama re-enactment purporting to be a documentary.

Produced by Hardy Pictures for …

Hell’s Kitchen UK will air from 11:40pm. The series was created by Gordon Ramsay but features others.

Supernatural back for TEN’s summer

New episodes of Supernatural, The Office, Numb3rs, Law and Order, Californication, Glee and Futurama are coming to TEN over summer.

The network has revealed its first week of programming for the non-ratings season, beginning November 29th.

It will premiere Family Guy spin-off, The Cleveland Show and launch new Jenna Elfman comedy Accidentally on Purpose.

White Collar, which premieres on November 25th, continues.

It will also repeat  The Simpsons, Merlin, Little Britain USA, Bondi Vet, Lie to Me, Rules of Engagement, Law and Order: CI.

TEN airs US game shows Don’t Forget The Lyrics and, for the …

7TWO: day one

Day One for 7TWO was a modest debut -but then, nobody, including Seven execs, was expecting it to make a big splash just yet. It will take some time to create awareness, and its better titles are not until mid-week anyway.

7TWO finished with 1.8% compared to GO! on 4.2%, ONE had 2.1%, ABC2 0.4% and SBS2 0.3%.

82,000 watched the channel launch at 12pm, with 88,000 averaging for the Michael Jackson concert that followed.

But Seven had a huge Sunday share overall.

Seven had a clean sweep of the top five programmes on Sunday …

No risk for 20-TEN

A year ago when TEN unveiled its programming for 2009 it brazenly shocked the nation when it said Big Brother would be replaced by a cooking show. And it promised other local titles including Talkin’ ’Bout Your Generation, Guerilla Gardeners, Bondi Vet and even some that never eventuated: Australia’s Hidden Genius and Undercover Boss.

Unveiling its 2010 titles last night in Melbourne, TEN programmer David Mott played it both safe and sure, only promising one new local title, the Junior Masterchef spin-off. …

TEN to launch new channel

The TEN Network will launch a new digital channel in 2010, reports the Courier Mail.

A third digital channel will launch sometime in the next 12 months, it reports.

Commercial networks are currently allowed two SD channels and one HD channel. Currently TEN has TEN, ONE HD and ONE SD which retransmits the feed from the 24 hour sports channel. But as GO! and 7TWO offer entertainment formats they potentially erode TEN’s market share. And as half the country is now on digital it makes the ONE SD channel less viable -except for …

TEN upbeat despite $89m loss

The TEN Network has reported an $89.4 million loss for the 12 months ended August 31st, down from a $274m profit the year before.

Operating earnings dropped 30 per cent to $151 million as television earnings slid 32 per cent, TEN said. But the network sees itself on the road to recovery.

”We are seeing, and it’s very pleasing to see, further strengthening signs in the revenue market after the times that we’ve been through, and there is an increase in demand levels clearly coming through in recent weeks,” Executive chairman, …

Merlin: Trailer

The second season of Merlin airs in the UK this weekend, and by the looks of these two trailers, should be just as much dashing fun as the first series.

Guests this season include Mackenzie Crook (currently on our screens in both Skins and Demons), who will appear in the as Cedric, who is determined to muscle in on Merlin’s position as Arthur’s right-hand-man. Sarah Parish will guest star as a troll masquerading as Lady Catrina. Adrian Lester will play the role of Myror, Charles Dance will play a character named Aredian …

Demons

Britain sure has ramped up its fantasy stories lately.

The revival of Doctor Who has reverberated throughout the industry with hit shows including Primeval, Merlin, Torchwood, Being Human and several more. It’s not exactly new so much as a vote of confidence. Most of the time we’ve reaped the rewards of their spacemen, monsters, ghouls and dinosaurs.

Not so in Demons.

This one really should have succeeded. ITV’s supernatural series has quite a pedigree including Merlin’s Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy as creators. In a central role is the esteemed Philip Glenister (Life on …
