Race that tops the nation
Week 45 saw Seven launch its new digital channel 7TWO with a mix of broad entertainment offering. It addressed the Nine / GO! combo that had upstaged it in the last few months. In sheer audience figures the 2009 Melbourne Cup’s record 2.67m viewers was the week’s top story. It was even Seven’s biggest audience all year. But the real news of the week was actually a lot more humble: the government’s lifeline to Community Television. After a lengthy campaign it will begin to dual-cast on analogue and digital some time …
All the drama of Week 44
In Week 44 viewers bid farewell to All Saints after 12 seasons across 11 years. The 70 minute episode ensured the show departed with its reputation intact and possibly signalled the end of an era of long running weekly dramas. It finished on 1.5m viewers -time will tell if Packed to the Rafters ever comes close to its legacy. Seven, which has been top-heavy in local drama with an embarrassment of riches, won the week and with the introduction of 7TWO today may have ended a winning run by the Nine …
Eamon Sullivan sizzles while MasterChef simmers
Celebrity MasterChef didn’t enjoy a big surge last night, even without Hey Hey the Reunion.
The reality show took 1.18m viewers, suggesting viewers preferred the emotional arc of ‘real people’ in the first series. Last night’s cook-off was won by swimmer Eamon Sullivan who looks like being the one to beat so far. He sent Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and actor Simon Westaway back to their pantries.
Meanwhile Three Rivers had a disappointing debut of 499,000, dropping a sizeable amount of its NCIS: LA lead in of 1.07m. The crime show …
The Secret Millionaire
If you were to take a snapshot of Nine’s schedule there’s a millionaire looking for an apprentice to join his financial advisory company at one end of the week, and now millionaires giving away money to the needy at the other.
Somewhere in between there is a television network laden with debt, cost cutting and a few high-profile stars on million dollar salaries too. There have also been a few shows lately where big wads of cash have been dished out to reality winners of low-rating TV formats. If you look very …

Nine wins the week
Having two and a half channels proved a winner for Nine in Week 37. Seven’s lack of a digital channel lost it the week by the slimmest of margins to Nine -just 0.2%. The extra share from GO!, which is added to Nine’s primary share, helped it win a week in which its biggest audience was 1.33m, a far cry from figures on Seven.
Nine won with 28.1% over Seven’s 27.9% and TEN’s 20.8%. The ABC had 17.3% and SBS 5.8%.
Nine won all three demo groups 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54. In Total …
Murder’s hit on commercial networks
Renewed and emerging hits were evident on the box last week as networks prepare to unveil fresh titles upon us once more. The biggest in the bunch was ABC’s Midsomer Murders which increased its lead to 1.48m and showed commercial networks how to win a traditional Sunday audience. Nine appears to have timed it right with Money for Jam nabbing 1.32m and the AFL passed 1.1m for TEN and 1m viewers for Seven.
But in Week 36 once again Seven won Total People with 27.8% just ahead of Nine’s 27.3% and TEN’s …
Nine pumps up the Jam
Timing is everything in television and it seems there’s nothing like Money for Jam in times of economic crisis.
Nine’s new infotainment show pulled an impressive 1.32m viewers last night, not just winning its timeslot, but already surpassing anything it had on air last week. That has to be good news for a network struggling to get its new shows to fire.
Together with Two and a Half Men and RPA, Nine managed to clinch the night by a slim 0.1% from Seven (of course GO! is in there too).
The news was bad …
Money for Jam
Things I learned from Money for Jam:
- If your workmates all make lunch for the boys instead of buying take away you’ll save enough money in a year to fly to Disneyland.
- If you fill out online surveys you can get paid quick cash on the side.
- Scott Cam has to appear in just about every show that Shelley Craft is in.
- The National Australia Bank has stitched up a nice little branding deal with the Nine Network.
- Anything’s got to be better than another week of Australia’s Perfect Couple.
Ok, I …
Airdate: Money for Jam
Nine’s next lifestyle series Money for Jam will air in early September.
Co-hosted by Paul Clitheroe (pictured), the series offers money making ideas and ways to save cash.
Joining Clitheroe are Shelley Craft, Shane Crawford and Effie Zahos.
In episode one, Effie will show you how to get a bonus worth nearly $3000 a year. Shane meets a man who has turned his love of beer into a business. Five tradesmen take Shelley’s lunchbox challenge. And there are words of wisdom from money-man Paul Clitheroe. Plus the “Super Scrooge of the Week” segment with …
Nine pins revival on new series
Nine may not be having the best of times lately, but it has several new shows to screen before the end of the year, and it will surely need them to take on its rivals.
They include the premiere of the local adaptation of The Apprentice featuring Mark Bouris and the next season of Aussie Ladette to Lady (pictured).
There is also a local version of Secret Millionaire in which wealthy folk mingle unknown amongst deserving groups in a bid to be philanthropic.
Factual series Money for Jam features Paul Clitheroe, Shane Crawford and …
Coming soon: Sea Patrol UK
There’s no Lisa McCune or Ian Stenlake for miles in this one…
Nine will soon be airing the somewhat confusingly titled Sea Patrol UK.
The National Geographic series follows an elite team of rescue agencies including the RNLI, the RAF, Customs and the Coastguard patrol 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Its slogan is “It’s tough out there.”
The series is one of several new titles on its slate that it recently tipped to advertisers would be coming soon.
Also included were: Let’s Dance for Comic Relief, Celebrity Singing Bee, Secret Millionaire, Survivors, Wipeout, …
