TEN wins Tuesday

And now for some good news. TEN won Tuesday night’s ratings. Very convincingly.

TEN won with a 27.4% share over Nine’s 24.6% and Seven’s 24.1%. It was a complete turnaround from Monday’s lousy 16% share.

It’s been quite some time since the network won an evening, but as audiences sample new summer line-ups, it was a double repeat of NCIS that spearheaded the win. That’s bad news for those who are looking for new treats in summer, when the audiences tell the networks “we wants repeats, please.”

2008: International hits

The Nine Network has topped the list of television’s most popular international shows in 2008.

While Seven is riding on its Aussie programming, Nine has seven of the top ten overseas shows this year, led by Charlie Sheen and Gordon Ramsay.

Averaging out the various shows and timeslots indicates Two and a Half Men led with the highest series average, of 1.503m viewers this year. It was closely followed by Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares at 1.501m viewers.

Significantly, both were ‘hits by accident’, trialled by Nine over summer and left long enough on air to …

Channel TEN has revamped its summer schedule (again) moving How to Look Good Naked, Rules of Engagement and Don’t Forget the Lyrics, dumping an extra NCIS repeat, adding new Law & Order plus In Plain Sight.

In Plain Sight revolves around Mary Shannon (Mary McCormack), a Deputy United States Marshal attached to the Witness Protection Program. Shannon must find ways to balance her professional life of protecting witnesses with her problematic family life. It has 12 eps from the USA Network, plus a 16 ep renewal.

Looking for the magic touch

TEN’s line up for 2009 includes more factual series than ever, returning favourites and new international content. After a disappointing 2008, especially in the second half, TEN will need the magic touch to win back loyal viewers.

The network made the announcement today as part of a three day tour across the country.

Headlining the announcement is the acquisition of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Cooking show MasterChef Australia will replace Big Brother across a 7pm timeslot mid year.

Another 7pm strip show is yet to be announced.

The new locally produced factual shows include …

Two and a Half Men takes a hit

Two and a Half Men slipped to a “new low” last night of 807,000 viewers last night, a long way behind last week when it had 1.005m in the same timeslot a week ago.

It was thrashed by Packed to the Rafters on 2.06m viewers. NCIS had 1.23m up from last week’s 1.19m.

No doubt Seven’s Melbourne Cup helped drive audiences to Seven’s shows, although both The Zoo and Find My Family dipped slightly from last week.

Many have argued that Nine’s wall to wall programming of Two and a Half Men will eventually …

ONE HD bumps TEN HD into limbo

TEN’s “science fiction Thursday”, Neighbours catch-up, timeshifted News and documentaries on TEN HD could become a thing of the past with confirmation that there is no contingency plan announced alongside the launch of ONE HD.

TEN HD will continue on air until April when it is overtaken by TEN’s 24hr sports channel ONE HD. The current home of TEN HD, Channel 12, will broadcast the sports content in standard definition.

That leaves Smallville and other fan favourites in television limbo. Other shows including Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica, Eureka, One Tree Hill, Friday Night Lights …
