ONE HD in Tassie: July 30

Tasmanian viewers will finally get ONE HD from Thursday July 30th.

The 24 hour sports channel will screen from 7pm.

The announcement follows negotiations by Tasmanian Digital Television, a joint venture between Macquarie Media and WIN Television.

TDT General Manager, Stephen Giles, said that ONE would be available to television viewers in Tasmania who currently receive TDT’s high definition service.

“Tasmanians certainly love their sport and, from 30 July, ONE will be the home of sport on Tasmania TV,” Mr Giles said.

ONE will broadcast sport, 24 hours a day and will be accessible for all …

ONE SD coming to Foxtel cable

TEN’s new 24 hour sports channel, ONE, will be available to Foxtel cable viewers in standard definition from July 1st.

The re-broadcast of ONE HD’s content will be allocated channel number 531 when it is played out to Foxtel cable subscribers.

ONE SD will be grouped with the sports genre channels. ONE HD has already been available to cable viewers with High Definition channels.

For satellite subscribers the situation is less clear, due once again, to awaiting space on an Optus satellite due to go up later in the year.

Southern Cross adds ONE HD from July 2

Regional viewers of Southern Cross 10 will finally see ONE HD in Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT and Victoria from 7pm July 2nd, it was announced today.

The addition of the channel follows months of complaints that that regional viewers could not access the 24 hour sports channel at the same time as metropolitan viewers, who have been accessing it since March.

Macquarie Southern Cross Media (MSCM) says it will launch ONE HD on Channel 50 to viewers who receive its HD service in three states, subject to digital coverage. Viewers will …

When is a ONE HD watermark not a ONE HD watermark?

The rebranding of SBS ONE and SBS TWO yesterday maylead to some confusion given that SBS HD is now SBS ONE HD.

The result is a watermark on the channel that sounds awfully confusing to ONE HD, TEN’s 24 hour sports channel.

Freeview CEO Robin Parkes yesterday welcomed the new channel, saying: “SBS TWO is a compelling addition to the free digital channels available on the Freeview platform.

“With free-to-view digital take-up steadily increasing, SBS TWO provides another reason for viewers to
switch to Freeview for the best television Australia has to offer.”

Freeview says it …

ONE for Foxtel cable

TEN’s new sports channel ONE will become available to all Foxtel cable subscribers from July 1st.

While the channel is already available to top-tier HD cable-based susbcribers now the SD channel will be added.

This means viewers will no longer have to switch platforms to view ONE.

“We are sure that SD viewers will be glad of the convenience of staying on a single platform as they navigate to view ONE,” TEN CEO Grant Blackley said.

The move follows a recent deal being stitched up between the two parties.

Satellite viewers will have to keep waiting …

Getting a Clearer View

It’s been labelled everything from over-hyped to an outright scam. There was no clear start-up date, viewers felt misled about 15 “new” digital channels, regional viewers screamed about being ignored, ad-skipping technology was shunned and they came down hard on that YouTube parody that summed up what we were all feeling anyway.

Could Freeview have had a worse start in this country if it tried?

Now as media, several manufacturers and indeed many viewers, are already offside -how can Freeview ever refresh its brand?

Returning: Indian Premier League cricket

TEN’s Indian Premier League begins this weekend on ONE HD.

The matches move to South Africa after it could not be held in India this year following security concerns. The tournament has been trimmed to four weeks with 24 double headers.

The first match will start on Saturday night.

On the nights where two games are to be played ONE’s coverage will begin around 8.30pm and finish in the early hours of the morning.

Glimpse at ONE ratings

Today we get our first glimpse of audiences on ONE, after OzTAM began tracking its figures yesterday.

Results are tallied for ‘unique programming’ -that is, shows that only air on ONE. Yesterday there was 18.5 hrs of unique programming on ONE in Sydney.

For dual programming (ie. AFL on both ONE and TEN), figures are combined as TEN results.

Yesterday the top unique show on ONE was Tread BMX at 7pm with 53,000 viewers. There were 16,000 each in Sydney and Brisbane, 11,000 in Perth, 7,000 in Melbourne and 3,000 in Adelaide.

ONE in Tassie: “Not good enough”

Tasmania’s Minister for Corrections and Consumer Protection, Lisa Singh has again criticised TDT for not giving viewers ONE HD, despite screening in most mainland capital cities.

“While over states have had access to better sports coverage over the past fortnight, Tasmanians have missed out,” said Ms Singh.

After writing to TDT she said the response about the future of ONE HD in Tasmania was not good enough, and has called on TEN and TDT to move quickly to deliver the services Tasmanians expected.

“The argument that there’s no audience for this channel simply doesn’t …

Profits tumble at TEN

TEN posted a net loss of $79.7 million yesterday for the six months to February, compared with a $270.5 million profit a year earlier. Earnings were cut by $138.4 million in write-downs to account for the fallen value of TV programs and outdoor assets in the advertising slump.

Last year’s profit was boosted by a $183.7 million tax gain, notes the Sydney Morning Herald.

The news comes as CanWest faces a critical deadline with its lenders next week as it seeks to stave off bankruptcy.

TEN said it was within its own debt covenants, …

Switch to Digital

Are you ready to be guided through the waves of confusing information to a land of milk, honey and high resolution vision? Help is apparently at hand. The Federal Government has launched an awareness campaign for the switch to digital television.

The $6.7 million advertising campaign was launched at the Get Ready for Digital conference in Sydney and incorporates a labelling scheme to attach to retail hardware include HD TVs and set top boxes.

The labels will identify if equipment is either digital-capable, digital-ready for standard definition or digital-ready for high-definition.

The digital-ready labelling …
