TV Tonight Awards 2009: The year of Shaun Micallef

The votes are in.

Readers have spoken on their best and worst television for 2009 in the third annual TV Tonight Awards.

The winners: Shaun Micallef, MasterChef and Packed to the Rafters.

Over 1000 surveys were completed this year, and there were some definite trends. Some choices were clear decisions, others were tight races.

Several “winners” were also “losers” elsewhere, showing a divided audience, and a number of populist shows proved their mettle by staying ahead of underdogs.

Shaun Micallef won both Favourite Male and Most Underrated Performer, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your …

Gallery: ABC3 launch

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today pressed a giant remote control button to officially launch ABC3. Rudd’s impending arrival was pumped like a rock star to an audience of kids, with comedic updates on the progress of his official car stopping at a McDonald’s drive-thru, complete with a surfboard strapped to the roof.

Upon his arrival he high-fived kids in the crowd, took SMS questions from child viewers and even sang the Play School theme. “It was on when I was your age.. . …

Amberley Lobo, Kayne Tremills, Ben Crawley, Scotty Tweedie, Stephanie ‘Hex’ Bendixsen and Hannah Wang are the six lucky presenters who will become the faces of ABC3, the new ad-free children’s network.

The six were introduced to media last night by Kim Dalton, ABC TV’s Director of Television, who unveiled the new digital channel last night at the network’s Ripponlea studio.

Aged 19 – 24, they hail from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide & Perth and will adopt key roles in channel presenting, reporting and hosting after winning the coveted positions from more …

Hugh Sheridan in Sony record deal

Packed to the Rafters’ Hugh Sheridan will sing on next Sunday’s Dancing with the Stars finale.

Sheridan, who recently performed at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, has signed a contract with Sony. His first single, Just Can’t Throw Us Away, will be released in the next fortnight. An album, with an R & B sound, will be released before Christmas.

“I’m well aware that a lot of people have crossed over from television to music, some successfully some not,” Sheridan told The Sunday Mail.

“Hopefully the fact that I’ve always sung and that music was …

Play School under fire for gambling venue concerts

The ABC is under fire for plans to stage live Play School concerts in NSW clubs where gambling and alcohol are available.

The criticism follows ABC Managing Director Mark Scott revealing the plans this week in Senate Estimates of the Communications Committee.

Friends of the ABC (Victoria) spokesperson Glenys Stradijot says ABC’s commercial activities have gone too far, putting commercial interests ahead of its responsibility to its children.

“As if Australia does not have enough problems with alcohol and gambling abuse, the ABC is assisting the clubs to promote themselves as family-friendly,” she said.

“It …

Three more join Play School

Following on from word that Hugh Sheridan will become a new Play School presenter when he isn’t tied up with Packed to the Rafters, the ABC has announced an additional three new names.

They are former All Saints actress Jolene Anderson, actress Abi Tucker (McLeod’s Daughters, The Secret Life of Us) and film actress Essie Davis (Hey Hey its Esther Blueburger, The Matrix Reloaded).

Tim Brooke-Hunt, Executive Head of ABC Childrens’, said: “We are thrilled that these talented actors have joined our fantastic team of Play School presenters. We believe that each of …

Hugh Sheridan for Play School

After news that he will present a show at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, now actor Hugh Sheridan will join the ABC’s Play School.

Talk about versatile.

The Packed to the Rafters star will present alongside former All Saints actress Jolene Anderson in between his commitments to Seven.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, and I’m grateful to Rafters for opening up new doors. I can’t wait,” Sheridan told the Sunday Telegraph.

“I love the show. John (Hamblin), Noni (Hazlehurst) and Benita (Collings) – they were my favourites as a kid.”

There have been plenty of presenters on …

Who will make Logie’s Hall of Fame?

The Logie Awards are yet to announce who it will induct into its Hall of Fame.

Last year writer, performer and director John Clarke was given the honour, joining an elite list of those who have made an impact on Australian television. While the inductee is usually an individual sometimes programmes have been honoured including Play School, Neighbours and Four Corners.

It could also be awarded to someone behind the scenes. Hector Crawford was the first, while Ken G. Hall, James Davern, Reg Grundy, Bruce Gyngell and Sam Chisholm are also inducted.

Seven censors Home & Away same-sex kiss

The Seven Network has censored a same sex kiss in its soapie Home and Away.

A scene involving a kiss between Joey (Kate Bell) and Charlie (Esther Anderson) has been censored following media stories with lobby groups criticising the storyline in a ‘family’ show.

The plotline involves the arrival of a young lesbian who has become attracted to one of the show’s regular characters. As the two grow more intimate they were set to share an on-screen kiss. In last night’s episode (pictured) the two girls finished a dance with an awkward and …

The Hollowmen explains ABC funding

It’s lucky we don’t have The Hollowmen making decisions on ABC’s triennial funding. Otherwise they would have no hope.

“Play School? Why are we still making Play School after fifty years?” asks Tony, the Prime Minister’s Principal Private Secretary (Rob Sitch)

“It needs to be constantly refreshed,” say Phillip, secretary to the PM’s Dept.

“How? The alphabet hasn’t changed. The round window…? There’s still a bear in there…..”

The clip was made as part of the ABC’s funding showcase to Minister Conroy this week in Canberra. It mocks most of the ABC’s big shows, but …
