O’Brien ready to go

“My character in Queer as Folk got dumped by his boyfriend because he couldn’t name all the Doctor Whos,” laughs Peter O’Brien.

Now ten years later he finds himself playing alongside The Doctor in “The Waters of Mars.”

For O’Brien, who moved to the UK in the early 1990s the role is one of many in his international career. He played Cameron Roberts in QAF for writer / producer Russell T. Davies, who would subsequently become celebrated for reviving the Who legend.

“There had been a couple of things Russell had asked me to …

Top Gear loss “not the be-all and end-all”

TV Tonight continues its interviews with key executives in television. Following on from last week’s interviews with Seven, ABC, TEN and Nine, today the spotlight turns to SBS Director of Content Matt Campbell.

The last two weeks have not been without their challenges for Campbell, who learned the fate of Top Gear, a programme he had taken a punt on many years ago when no other network would touch it.

Having spent a lot of time trying to convince the BBC it should be staying at its natural home, he admits the loss …

Peter O’Brien lands Doctor Who special

Peter O’Brien will guest star in the next instalment of Doctor Who: The Waters Of Mars.

He will feature as Ed, second in command to The Doctor’s new companion, Adelaide.

As previously reported, David Tennant is joined by his cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet, with Adelaide played by Lindsay Duncan. Adelaide is head of the Mars Base and doesn’t take kindly to an uninvited appearance by The Doctor.

The BBC has also released a new teaser for “The Waters Of Mars”, the second of four specials being screened in the UK this year.

Letting rip with Captain Jack

“I’ve done soap operas, I’ve done children’s dramas, I’ve done long-running series, I’ve done Doctor Who one-off episodes. So to tell a five hour story was a brilliant opportunity and I absolutely loved it,” Russell T. Davies tells TV Tonight.

Davies’ latest series of the Who spin-off, Torchwood, hits UK and Australian screens this week, as a five episode ‘mini-series event.’  The adventure starring the dashing John Barrowman, afford him opportunities he can’t explore in Doctor Who.

“Well, it’s an adult show for starters, it goes out at 9:00, whereas in Britain Doctor …

Catch up with Cagney and Lacey

In the 1980s the two toughest female cops on the box were undoubtedly Cagney and Lacey.

Only Angie Dickinson in Policewoman had made such an impact before them.

Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly were a formidable duo on the screen together, playing two very different career women between 1982-1988. Christine Cagney was a single, career-minded woman, while Mary Beth Lacey was a married working mother.

“It wasn’t Lucy and Ethel, or Laverne and Shirley,” Sharon says. “It was actually two women working and talking about how they felt about what they did.”

And Tyne adds, …

Axed: Life on Mars

US network ABC has announced it will not be ordering any additional episodes of Life on Mars beyond its 17 episodes.

That’s bad news for Channel TEN, which had been enjoying good word of mouth for the US adaptation, screening on Thursday nights.

The only good news is the network has given producers enough notice to allow a definitive ending to the series. Production is expected to continue for at least a few more weeks, with the finale starring Jason O’Mara expected to air in the US around early April.

“We felt it was …

It’s managed to secure a fairly impressive voice cast including Peter Paige …

Desperate Housewives and former Queer as Folk actor Gale Harold is out of intensive care and improving at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering serious injuries in a motorcycle accident.

A statement from the actor’s representatives says “a full recovery is expected.” Harold had swelling on the brain and a fractured shoulder after last week’s accident.

He had been under observation in the intensive care unit at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

Actor Gale Harold is in critical condition and awaiting further tests after being hospitalized with injuries incurred in a Tuesday motorcycle accident.

The actor best known for his role as “Brian” in Queer as Folk is currently appearing in the fifth season of Desperate Housewives.
