Rumours: GTV9, Top Gear… and Seven’s digital?
The rumour mill is in overdrive on three fronts today:
1. GTV9 Melbourne is close to finalising a sale.
2. Nine is set to announce it has successfully nabbed Top Gear from SBS.
3. Seven will unveil its digital channel plans today.
GTV9:
Nine put off its sale of its studio in Bendigo Street, Richmond in June 2008, withdrawing the property from sale following the global credit crunch. But TV Tonight hears it has been back on the market with a deal very close. The heritage-protected building was constructed in 1908 as part of the Wertheim …
Hosts announced for Great Aussie Cook Off
Nine’s new weekend lifestyle show The Great Aussie Cook Off will be hosted by Vince Sorrenti and Jo Silvagni.
To air in October, the 8 part series will air at 5pm Sundays -far less profile than TEN’s MasterChef. With a leading supermarket behind it, the show is one of a growing number of sponsor-driven entertainment series.
The competition sees families of 4 from around Australia compete against each other in a celebration of culinary cultural diversity.
“There is nothing nicer than having a good laugh with the family while enjoying …
Happy 70th Pete Smith!
And how can we not acknowledge the 70th Birthday celebrations of one Mr. Pete Smith, who joined Nine in 1963, and is still entrenched with the network.
Best known for his work on such shows as Sale of the Century (make that “Saaaaaaale of the Century”), In Melbourne Tonight and many years as the voice of Channel Nine (“we apologise for this break in transmission”), Smith is widely known for being one of the nicest, and funniest, in the biz. He has seen it all and is always generous with his time …
Farewell: Temptation
Friday marks the last ever episode of Temptation, the game show that has, in two formats, been a part of Channel Nine for many years.
Temptation revived the Sale of the Century format in May 2005 with Ed Phillips and Livinia Nixon. After many years with Tony Barber, and subsequently Glenn Ridge, it was a risky move. But viewers warmed to the chemistry between Phillips and Nixon, who had previously done radio together.
Last year the show’s return was delayed following the on-going success of Two and a Half Men. Production of the …
No Temptation in this finale
Temptation has undergone another programming change which is downright insulting for its final (ever) episode.
Previously it was set to limp out at 10:00pm Friday January 23rd.
Now it’s ending on the same day -at 11:30am in the morning.
Very disappointing.
In the evening Nine is expected to have cricket and movies.
For a show with such a long history as Temptation / Sale of the Century it’s a dreadful exit. Seems there’s no such thing as a graceful exit in television anymore.

Top Gear Australia
When you’re charged with the task of producing a local version of an overseas format, international producers invariably insist you follow a tried and true format. So You Think You Can Dance Australia looks the same as the American version. For years Sale of the Century was copied around the world right down to Tony Barber’s bouncy entry. Sticking to the format is considered one of the only safeguards in ‘fool-proofing’ any new version.
But it brings with it the challenge: how do you make it your own? So it is with …
GTV9 studios gets Heritage listing
GTV9 Studios were today recognised by the Heritage Council of Victoria for its vast history, including the 50+ years of television that have been produced within its walls.
The original 1908 building, has been home to the Wertheim Piano Factory, Heinz Soups (1935) and Channel Nine (1955). Studio 9 has been used for productions including In Melbourne Tonight, The Don Lane Show, New Faces, Hey Hey its Saturday, Sale of the Century, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, The Footy Show and Temptation.
“This property is very interesting for the way it demonstrates …
