With a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors’ Guild Award for Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife is really a no-brainer. Good luck to any TV Critic that doesn’t give this one the thumbs up.

2010 SAGs: winners

It was almost a complete rewrite of the  Golden Globes at the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards today, with all but Toni Collette repeating their wins from last week.

Collette lost out to Tina Fey for the Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

Screen Actors’ Guild Awards 2010: Guide

This year the Showcase channel has the rights to the Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, commending Americas’s finest performances in film and TV.

They will screen live to Australia at 12pm Sunday, with Red Carpet events on E!

Toni Collette and Simon Baker are again nominated, following on from their Globes event earlier this week.

Former Golden Girls’ star Betty White will receive a Life Achievement Award.

Awards season rolls on as the Screen Actors Guild Awards announce their best picks for 2009 with Glee, Mad Men, 30 Rock, Dexter, True Blood and The Good Wife among the top nominees.

Once again Simon Baker and Toni Collette have landed lead acting nods.

In the unique best ensemble category for comedy, the fight is between 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, Glee and Modern Family. In drama the teams from The Closer, Dexter, The Good Wife, Mad Men and True Blood are recognised.

SBS will screen the acclaimed HBO miniseries John Adams next month.

The series on the second US President stars Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson and Rufus Sewell.

It has already screened on Pay Television but now it gets its first Free to Air broadcast in Australia. The lavish 7 part drama had garnered a slew of awards including 13 Emmys, 4 Golden Globes and 3 SAGs.

Lifetime Achievement coming for Betty White

Veteran actress Betty White will receive a Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment at next year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

White has already won six Emmys and is best known for her roles in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls.

Since her career break in 1949, when she has also been a regular on late-night talk shows going back to Jack Paar, Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson and game shows such as The Match Game, To Tell the Truth, I’ve Got A Secret, Liar’s Club and Password.  …

Next Sunday night Seven has slated the excellent Stephen Frears film, The Queen.

It is set to air following Dancing with the Stars finale at 9pm.

While it’s based on fictional conversations between the Royal Family around the time of Princess Diana’s death, it’s certainly a fascinating hypothetical. It depicts a fictional account of the events following her death in 1997, coming 3 months after the coming to power of Tony Blair’s New Labour government.

AFI honours Geoffrey Rush

Actor Geoffrey Rush was awarded the AFI’s Raymond Longford Award, before an industry event of 400 people last night in Melbourne.

He is only the sixth actor to receive the AFI’s highest award since it began 41 years ago.

Rush has devoted most of his career to theatre and film including Shine, Lantana,  Harvie Krumpet, Munich and Shakespeare in Love.

Vale: Karl Malden

Esteemed character actor Karl Malden, who became known to millions of TV viewers as a veteran police detective in The Streets of San Francisco, has died, aged 97. No cause of death was reported.

Despite his years alongside a young Michael Douglas (pictured), it was in film and theatre that he made his mark. He played the shy suitor in A Streetcar Named Desire and an Oscar nominated performance in On the Waterfront. Amongst his countless films were Baby Doll, Gypsy, Cheyenne Autumn and Nuts.

Mariska Hargitay hospitalised

Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay was taken to hospital in New York after suffering chest pains this week.

This is the third time Hargitay has been hospitalised since December. The previous two times were for a collapsed lung.

“Mariska Hargitay went to the hospital this morning after experiencing some discomfort relating to her earlier lung condition,” a spokesperson said.

“She is undergoing routine tests and expects to be feeling better soon.”
