Charlie puts the Sheen on Mondays
What is it about Melbourne viewers and Two and a Half Men? Last night the new episode hauled 635,000 in that city, rising to a big 1.58m viewers -and very probably assuring its place as the week’s top show. No doubt the end of the long weekend in Melbourne helped as viewers settled in for an early night.
Both the Charlie Sheen comedy and My Kitchen Rules have been battling it out for top place recently. Last night Seven’s cooking contest ina pseudo MasterChef kitchen settled with just under 1.4m viewers, still …
Cooking pips cars on Tuesday
Nine might have to rethink its advertisements for Top Gear touting it as Australia’s new #1 show after last night it was pipped by My Kitchen Rules.
It was a line ball tussle but Seven’s cook-off pulled 1.4m viewers ahead of Nine’s first-run roadtest on 1.38m -well down on its season premiere. Both left Bondi Rescue / The Biggest Loser in their wake (934,000 / 774,000).
Nine’s second episode of Top Gear, which had already aired on SBS, slipped to 1.15m behind NCIS on 1.36m but bettered Grey’s Anatomy on 1.04m.

Deal or no Deal in new ratings tussle
With all the attention given to evening schedules, and the ratings war at breakfast, one could be forgiven for overlooking the game show war that leads into the News for Seven and Nine.
Between Deal or No Deal and Hot Seat, 2010 has not started so well for Seven.
The Andrew O’Keefe game show has taken a drop in ratings this year, allowing Nine’s Eddie McGuire show to snatch several winning nights.
Last week Deal’s best figure was 558,000 viewers. Hot Seat reached 620,000. Of the four nights they were head to head, each …

Should Finance Experts disclose deals?
There’s been a fair bit of scrutiny recently when it comes to those financial experts talking to the News.
Last week’s Seven News cross in which a Macquarie Bank broker was seen checking out Miranda Kerr made news around the world.
Today the Sydney Morning Herald raises the question of commercial deals between banks and networks.
Under ACMA’s Code of Practice networks are required to disclose such commercial arrangements but some in the media and financial sectors are questioning a lack of disclosure.
Television access for financial experts to represent their employers is said to …
Summer’s winners and losers
The summer ratings season of 2009 -2010 has ended.
And while Seven has come out on top, Nine also found reason to smile.
Seven won summer in Total People, but Nine and the ABC both increased their shares based on last summer. TEN took the biggest dive of all 5 Free to Air Networks.
Total People: 2009 – 2010 (2008 – 2009)
Seven: 29.4 (29.6)
Nine: 27.6 (26.9)
TEN: 18.5 (19.7)
ABC: 17.5 (16.6)
SBS: 6.9 (7.1)
But comparisons to last summer are tricky given not all networks had digital channels operating, and Timeshifting was also introduced on December 27th.
Both …

Ooops. Live cross exposure.
Ooops…
An office worker at Macquarie Private Wealth must have forgotten about the cross Martin Lakos was doing to Seven’s Chris Bath live to air today.
The clip says it all really….
Aus Open down, but it’s all about the News.
Channel Seven’s 2010 Australian Open has lost more than four million viewers nationally compared to 2009, claims media analyst Steve Allen.
Fusion Strategy says the audience has plummetted by about 40 per cent year-on-year.
The drop comes at a time when the network is already under fire from viewers in radio talkback, online and print.
Seven however maintains it is smashing the competition. “We won last week, we’re winning this week. And our clients are happy with our audience delivery,” said spokesperson Simon Francis.
Meanwhile, Rebecca Wilson writes that the audience for Seven News yields …
Anger grows at Tennis delays
Last night, tennis fans in Melbourne and Sydney got a little reminder of what sports fans around the rest of the country have been experiencing since the Australian Open started: disrupted broadcasts.
Not long after the Serena Williams and Sam Stosur match began, Seven crossed to its 90 minute block of Seven News, Today Tonight and Home And Away.
By the time the highlights of the match resumed, Williams had beaten Stosur 6-4 6-2.
The Daily Telegraph notes that Sydney’s ATN7 took more than 300 calls complaining about the move.
Once again Seven’s messageboard was …
Seven scores with tennis
After two weeks of losing to Nine, the Seven Network hit back last week, thanks in no small part to the Australian Open. However one media report last week suggested tennis audiences are significantly down on last year.
Despite this the Seven Network won Week 4 with 31.4% share to Nine’s 27.5% and TEN’s 17.7%. The ABC had 16.9% and SBS 6.5%.
The ABC lost quite a bit of ground this week, but managed to sneak ahead of TEN on its usual Friday night and even Nine and TEN on Saturday.
The biggest audience …
Viewers hit tennis volleys at Seven
Last year viewers outside of Sydney and Melbourne were slamming Channel Seven for their coverage of the Australian Open, notably for delaying evening sessions to fit with its evening schedules.
Just 3 days into the 2010 tournament and the complaints have already started.
On Yahoo messageboards there is feedback (and that’s about the nicest thing you can call it) with posts on:
- Why is the Open not live tonight in Qld?
- Channel 7 has 0 idea how to show tennis.
- Get rid of Courier.
- Who do we complain too about 7?
- Delaying …
