7PM Project divides critics
This week Channel TEN’s 7PM Project notches up 8 months on air.
After repeated attempts at developing a show to fill the timeslot, including Taken Out and even the infamous Yasmin’s Getting Married, TEN has held its nerve with the Roving Enterprises show, despite figures which many assumed would sound the death knell.
Last week it averaged 653,000 viewers, and has doubtless impacted on TEN’s early evening schedule.
But has it found its feet? Has it improved its mix of news and comedy and is it time for audiences to revisit the show?
TV Tonight …
Is Dance patronising the audience?
I happen to think the dancing on So You Think You Can Dance Australia is exhilarating stuff.
The young dancers are terrific with their energy and art, putting celebrity dancers on other shows to shame.
But it’s an endurance test to sit through the rest of the showjust to watch the dance content. It feels like advertorials and verbal padding outweight the actual dance.
If TEN wants to look at one of the reasons why the show is down this year maybe they should be asking if there is too much filler?
On Wednesday night …
Adam Lambert for Dance, Sunrise.
American Idol’s Adam Lambert arrives in Sydney on Thursday and is set to appear on So You Think You Can Dance Australia later that night (yikes, jet lag).
He will also appear on Sunrise next Monday morning.
Sydney fans can also catch him signing copies of his album ‘For Your Entertainment’ at HUM on Oxford, Sydney, on Saturday, March 6th from 12pm.
He will also visit Melbourne on Tuesday with his itinerary yet to be confirmed (NB: I will update this post with the info later, so check back).
Tears for Dance
In So You Think You Can Dance Australia there are tears when they get the gig, and more tears when they are cut.
Last night B-Boy Gaz couldn’t hold back the emotion as he was eliminated, along with Mikhaela in the show’s second live elimination. He struggled to fight the tears as he thanked the show for giving him the opportunity.
Meanwhile one dancer, Matt was seen on crutches, following a largely-unexplained accident that clearly happened since the record for Wednesday’s heat. It might have helped the audience understand what took place, and …
258,000 viewers agree with David Leckie
258,000 viewers agreed with Seven CEO David Leckie that Cougar Town is a s*** show.
At least, that’s how much the show dropped from the first week to the second.
The Seven comedy still won its slot but it took a dive from 1.34m to 1.08m. The White Room similarly slipped, down to 678,000 allowing So You Think You Can Dance Australia / The Biggest Loser to win on 914,000 / 838,000 while Getaway had to settle for 833,000. Those numbers are low all round, with viewers clearly unhappy with choices. Is that …
Industry endorses Dance with an extra prize
So You Think You Can Dance Australia has added to its 2010 prize package with the choice of three professional dance contracts being available to the winner.
The first to be revealed is the chance to join the Australian Dance Theatre’s 2010 season of “Ignition,” with a season at the Adelaide Festival Centre.
As well as performing in the showcase by Artistic Director, Garry Stewart, the winner lands the standard $200,000 cash prize.
Two more contracts are yet to be revealed.
The additional prize is no doubt a ‘win / win.’ The show was famously …
Memo to So You Think You Can Dance
Memo to So You Think You Can Dance Australia.
Can we ban the phrase “Comfort Zone” for the rest of the series, please?
Last night it was used by both judges and host. It’s such a TV cliche these days, especially in Reality.
We know the dancers are tackling areas of discipline that are not their speciality. It’s the whole premise of the show.
Last time this issue was raised here was March 2008 in reference to So You Think You Can Dance Australia and It Takes Two.
ps….and preferably the word …

So You Think You Can join the Navy
“Week after week our dancers must perfect new styles working with Australia’s best choreographers and each other, all of which requires stamina, perseverance and teamwork,” said Dance host Natalie Bassingthwaighte last night.
“This year we are delighted to have the support of the Australian Navy who share our values of teamwork, fitness and endurance. So before all our guys headed to Jason’s Melbourne Studio, we set our Top 20 an unusual challenge.”
A montage followed with the Top 20 dancers being put through the wringer with Navy trainers leading exercises, a mud run, …

TEN’s tough Tuesday
Seven’s new cooking contest won its timeslot on night two as My Kitchen Rules increased to 1.18m viewers (up from 1.10m). With Nine committed to the Survivor finale (892,000 / 804,000) it gave Seven a window of opportunity.
The return of Grey’s Anatomy (1.21m) in the traditional Rafters slot was even better news. Together with its standard early night line-up, Seven took the night comfortably on 31.6% to Nine’s 27.1% and TEN’s 18.9%.
The best for TEN was So You Think You Can Dance Australia on 872,000 -down from Sunday’s premiere of 1.16m …
