Critics’ Choice 2009

With the official TV year at an end TV Tonight has turned to those who know it best, Australian TV critics & journalists, to ask them what worked, what failed, what surprised and what annoyed?

Participating in this survey were:

Melinda Houston (Sunday Age), Richard Clune (Sunday Telegraph), James Manning (Mediaweek), Nicole Brady (The Age), Erin McWhirter (Daily Telegraph), Colin Vickery (Herald Sun) and Andrew Mercado (TV Week).

BEST DRAMA
Tangle was a popular choice: “It was new, nasty and unpredictable.”
“It was another standout from the John Edwards stable and showcased the subtle …

ADbc

I feel woefully inadequate. Like I’ve just been to a dinner party of academics who have all debated the finer points of the art world, politics and philosophy. I just sat there cracking punchlines and flirting with the waiter.

The party of five at ADbc were much smarter than me. SBS’ new panel show is to History what Spicks and Specks is to music, Talkin’ ‘ Bout Your Generation is to pop culture, The Squiz is to sports and… well, you get the drift.

Sam Pang (Eurovision) hosts this new half hour with …

TEN renews Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation

EXCLUSIVE: TEN has renewed its hit panel series Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation for second season.

Production wrapped last night in Melbourne on the 2009 season, extended to 17 episodes, with a cross-network and themed episode featuring Kerri Anne Kennerley, Wil Anderson and Josh Lawson.

TEN Programmer David Mott announced the news to cast and crew at a wrap party.

“Shows come and go, but clearly this one has struck a chord with the Australian public. I can talk about ratings, and yes it averaged …

Tuesdays are up for a change

It’s worth noting that so far Seven has left a TBA in its schedule for Tuesday June 30th from 8:30pm – 10:30pm.

That’s normally where All Saints sits, followed by 10 Years Younger in 10 Days which concludes the previous week, June 23rd.

There has been some talk that Seven was looking to bring Packed to the Rafters back earlier, due to the strength of TEN’s Tuesday programming.

Could it do so on June 30?

It would also mean Rafters would not go head to head with new NCIS episodes, which also concludes on June …

Jon Olb: Hitmaker

With three hit shows Director Jon Olb has been keeping a frenetic pace lately. But if ever there was truth to ‘making hay while the sun shines’ it’s now. The economic gloom has powered his television gigs, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, Spicks and Specks and Thank God You’re Here.

As Series Director on all three -and on three different networks, no less- he has to be one of the hottest properties in television right now. So while all his shows are firing, Olb’s recent workload has been relentless. He’s lucky all three …

Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation

Panel shows are all the rage. When they really fire -as many have on the ABC- they become good audience pullers and make economic sense. No expensive location or top heavy script departments here.

Commercial television hasn’t always managed to hit the magic formula. Todd McKenney and You May Be Right anyone? Glenn Robbins and Out of the Question anyone? It’s a sad but true state of affairs.

Good News Week, which was born on the ABC, and the now defunct The Panel, are two commercial exceptions,  both TEN brands, along with Nine’s …

Airdate: Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation

TEN has on air promotions that indicate its new panel show hosted by Shaun Micallef, Talkin’ Bout Your Generation will premiere 7:30pm Tuesday May 5th.

With Bondi Rescue ending the week before, the new show will feature Amanda Keller, Charlie Pickering and Josh Thomas as Baby Boomer, Gen X and Gen Y respectively.

The Granada-produced show is an original format.

Bad news for NEWStopia

How to break this gently? Sorry, it can’t be done…

Don’t expect to see NEWStopia back on television.

When TEN announced Shaun Micallef would front its new panel show (now entitled) Talkin ‘Bout Your Generation everyone had expected he could continue with SBS’ NEWStopia. The show had enjoyed three series on SBS, becoming a cult favourite and generating good reviews.

TEN’s official press release even promised, “Micallef will continue his work on SBS series NEWStopia” -a nice nod from one network to current obligations.

Behind the scenes the fallout has been less cheerful.

Amanda Keller joins TEN panel

TEN has announced extra panellists for Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, the new name of its cross-generational panel show, previously dubbed My Gen (is the new name really an improvement?)

The team captains will be Amanda Keller (Swift & Shift Couriers, Mondo Thingo) will appear for the Baby Boomers, comedian Charlie Pickering, best known for his Foxtel series The Mansion, will represent Gen X.

20yo comic Josh Thomas (The Sideshow) will be the Gen Y leader.

The panel show by Granada is hosted by Shaun Micallef and set to air mid year on TEN.
