All the drama of Sunday

There were two locally produced dramas on television last night: one was the highly-publicised Wicked Love telemovie on Nine, the other was the ABC3 family series My Place which had its first run on ABC1 in a prime Sunday night slot.

Wicked Love: The Maria Korp Story did well with an audience of just under 1.3m winning its timeslot and pushing The Good Wife down to 902,000 on TEN. Seven’s Bones was sandwiched with a respectable 1.23m. Reviews had panned the Nine telemovie but viewers still tuned in to see the sordid …

Television City was Australia’s Hollywood

There’s a lovely little story in today’s Age about memories of GTV9, which has been conditionally sold to Lend Lease developers.

The legendary Pete Smith says the “Television City” tag it pinched from CBS gave the network “sparkle.”

Studio 9 has always been the centre of live television in Australia, the home of big names like Kennedy, Lane, Newton, Somers … even Sam Newman has 16 years of live television under his belt there.

The Wertheim Piano Factory, built in 1908 by the grandfather of former premier Jeff Kennett (who knew?), has for …

Generation’s Sunday sacrifice

TEN’s decision to move Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation from Tuesdays to Sundays is proving tricky after its second week well behind 2009 averages.

It took 1.09m viewers, third in its spot behind Border Security / Air Ways (1.27m / 1.26m) and Twenty20 Cricket (1.24m) -but it fared better in the key demos winning all groups. TEN did win the night in its target demos 16-39 and 18-49.

Even with demo wins Your Gen is still a long way behind the figures it used to attract on Tuesdays: between 1.5 – 1.7m. Now the …

Good News PM

The Prime Minister for Television Appearances will pop up tonight on Good News Week after he paid a visit to their last record.

It follows recent appearances on Sunrise, Q & A, Julia Gillard on Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? and Today.

The Opposition’s Joe Hockey was recently a guest on Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation and Meet the Press.

Rudd’s appearance will go up against Malcolm Turnbull’s appearance on Q & A tonight.

While the political shows are understandable, some are questioning the growing TV appearances by the Government in the …

3 new comedies stitch up ABC funding

Three comedy projects that were developed under a Film Victoria/ABC TV comedy initiative STITCH will receive funding from the ABC.

The projects were selected from more than 200 applicants and rewarded with a three-day workshop last year
with comedy writing mentoring from Steve Kaplan (whose graduates have worked on Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, Big Love and The Daily Show) and insight from Andrew Knight (Full Frontal, Tripping Over, SeaChange) and and Mike Bullen (Cold Feet).

The three projects are:

Next of Kin – Josh Thomas (Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation), and Todd Abbott …

Good news for Good Wife

The first day of the 2010 ratings season was good news for TEN and Seven.

The Seven Network won the night with a 30.5% share ahead of its rivals, but News bulletins notwithstanding it was the premiere of The Good Wife that took the biggest audience.

The Julianna Margulies drama took a cool 1.4m viewers for TEN, one of its best audiences in some time. In its new night Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation also performed with 1.32m viewers. Both TEN shows won all key demos.

Seven also scored with Air Ways (1.32m), Bones (1.21m) …

Generation 3D

If you have a pair of those red and blue 3D glasses handy, then tomorrow night’s Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation’s segment in 3D is a bit of fun.

Apart from the drained colour, it works pretty well for those who have never seen the effect via Free to Air Television before.

In truth it’s Amanda Keller and Basil Brush who steal the show. Joe Hockey is a good sport but needs to loosen up -still, at least he played along.

…and wait for the Panda.

The 3D specs are available in select mags this …

Talkin’ ’bout Micallef

“‘Is this is a good idea, it seems to be suggesting that we’re not coping with the expectations of the next year. Has anyone thought of this?’” asked Shaun Micallef.

TEN’s new promo with its Celebrity Support Group has certainly got people talking -online, on radio and even with the odd mental health experts questioning its intent.

When Shaun Micallef was given the script he couldn’t help but ask about it’s purpose either.

“But they said ‘Yeah we know, it’s self-deprecating.’”

But Micallef is very possibly one of the few network personalities who can get …

TEN: February 7 schedule

TEN’s schedule for the first week of ratings is confirmed.

The Biggest Loser, hosted by Hayley Lewis, is stripped across its week following The 7PM Project, leaving some shows to commence at 8pm and others at 8:30pm.

So You Think You Can Dance Australia will become a Wednesday night variety show, following its debut week of auditions beginning Sunday January 31st.

Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation shifts from Tuesdays to Sundays followed by The Good Wife premiere and House.

Bondi Rescue and Law and Order: SVU return.

And TEN is all but cutting its umbilical cord to …

TV Tonight Awards 2009: The year of Shaun Micallef

The votes are in.

Readers have spoken on their best and worst television for 2009 in the third annual TV Tonight Awards.

The winners: Shaun Micallef, MasterChef and Packed to the Rafters.

Over 1000 surveys were completed this year, and there were some definite trends. Some choices were clear decisions, others were tight races.

Several “winners” were also “losers” elsewhere, showing a divided audience, and a number of populist shows proved their mettle by staying ahead of underdogs.

Shaun Micallef won both Favourite Male and Most Underrated Performer, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your …

Executive …

Chat back before the cameras

More chat shows in the works?

The success of Spicks and Specks and Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (both directed by Jon Olb) has other networks reaching for the pilot slate.

The Age notes Nine has filmed a pilot for a new panel-style talk show with The Chaser’s Julian Morrow as host and other comedians. Nine is apparently approaching it as a ”workshop” rather than a full-blown pilot. There were previous reports of a panel show for Eddie McGuire as far back as August.

Meanwhile TV Tonight understands Seven has also been chipping …
