Talking Heads: Olivia Newton-John

She’s an Australian princess of the people, she’s our Livvy. And she’s chatting to Peter Thompson on an upcoming edition of Talking Heads.

The daughter of a Welsh-born Professor of German and granddaughter of a Nobel prizewinning physicist, Newton-John opted very early on to follow her own dream of a career in music. In a career spanning more than four decades, her record sales have topped 100 million; she’s had numerous Number One hits in the US and the UK; and she’s won four Grammys.

But she also waged a very public battle …

Talking Heads: Graeme Blundell

On next Monday’s Talking Heads Peter Thompson talks to actor, writer and director, Graeme Blundell.

Blundell has directed over 100 plays, acted in about the same number and appeared in more than 40 films and hundreds of hours of TV, including The Hollowmen most recently.

He’s been Associate Director of the Melbourne Theatre Company and Artistic Director of Kinsela’s in Sydney, written biographies of Graham Kennedy and  Brett Whiteley, plus his own autobiography, The Naked Truth, A Life in Parts and is currently regular columnist in The Australian.

But everyone still remembers him …

Talking Heads: Renee Geyer

Legendary singer Renee Geyer is a guest on Talking Heads next week, the ABC’s conversation series.

Since landing on the Australian music scene in the 1970s, Geyer has all but defined rhythm and blues vocals in this country. She calls herself a ‘white Hungarian Jew from Australia sounding like a 65-year-old black man from Alabama.’

Now with 22 albums under her belt she talks to Peter Thompson.

It airs 6:30pm Monday June 8th.

When Adam meets Peter

Next Monday on Talking Heads Peter Thompson (pictured) is joined journalist Adam Shand, who spent three years investigating Melbourne’s  underworld war for Sunday and The Bulletin magazine.

Despite never having written about crime, Shand promised his media bosses he’d crack the story of Melbourne’s gangland murders.

Shortly after Jason Moran was shot dead in front of his young children at a football ground, Shand ventured into the inner circle… mixing with the drug-dealers, the thugs and the murderers.

What did he make of the men who would be portrayed in the TV series …

When Garry meets Peter

Next week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson chats to the legendary Garry McDonald.

The conversation show of course is known for its intimate and revealing chats with its guests.

For part of this interview, McDonald is relaxing on his sofa, crocheting a bamboo and cotton shawl for his wife Diane Craig.

It turns out that crochet is part of McDonald’s relaxation plan to keep his famous anxiety at bay. How well many of us remember his very public breakdown after trying to resurrect the iconic talk-show host, Norman Gunston in 1993. He had to …

Talking Tina

Vocalist Tina Arena is a guest on the ABC’s Talking Heads this month.

Arena, chatting to host Peter Thompson will discuss her early years, including growing up on Young Talent Time, the ‘post-YTT’ years in the wilderness. The music industry wouldn’t touch her. There were jingles, pub gigs and a video clip focusing on her cleavage. Heading for Los Angeles, Tina says her song writing became a form of therapy. Her return to form arrived in the form of the “Don’t Ask” album followed by a family life based in Paris.

We …

Posie Graeme-Evans on Talking Heads

Here’s one for true fans of Australian television, an interview with Posie Graeme-Evans on the ABC’s Talking Heads.

Graeme-Evans co-created both McLeod’s Daughters and Hi-5 for the Nine Network, and rose high in its ranks as Director of Drama for Nine from 2002 to 2005. In such a blokey industry, she is one of too few women in television to have held a managerial role.

Earlier this year Nine bought the production company Kids Like Us and the Hi-5 brand with Southern Star.

It screens at 6:30pm Monday October 6th on ABC1.
