Logies relent on Community TV eligiblity

The 2010 Logie Awards will allow Community Television broadcasters to submit for its Outstanding categories for the first time.

The shift follows a campaign in 2009 by Channel 31 producer Shannon Marinko to submit The Bazura Project for consideration in a year when comedy was considered fairly slim.

At the time he was knocked back, with the Logies citing Free to Air and Pay TV eligibility and associated rulings. That drew the attention of Media Watch which began raising questions about eligibility.

Since then Freeview has embraced the Community TV sector and the …

Community TV wins digital breakthrough

It has been a long, hard-fought campaign -but the Community Television sector sees a light at the end of the digital tunnel.

The Rudd Government has finally delivered it the news it has been seeking: a switch to digital broadcasting.

The Government will temporarily allocate vacant spectrum, previously known as Channel A, to the community broadcasting sector, allowing Community TV stations C31 in Melbourne, TVS in Sydney, QCTV in Brisbane and Channel 31 Adelaide to simulcast their services until the switch to digital-only television in capital cities in 2013. A new community licensee …

The Invisible, Inaudible Family

While community television rattles the can over funding issues, never let it be said it isn’t pushing the boundaries on content either.

Currently screening on Channel 31 Melbourne is a television sitcom to rival….ummm Fishcam?

The Invisible Inaudible Family is a traditional sitcom, in the vein of Family Ties or Hey Dad! except for one thing -it has no characters.

Yep, it’s literally what it’s title promises: an invisible and inaudible family.

The half hour show, which runs at midnight on Friday nights is set in a traditional family house, with a living room, kitchen …

Community TV looks to state premiers

As state premiers meet with Prime Minister Rudd in Darwin today, the community television sector is urging them to pressure the Federal Government to support a shift to a digital platform.

The urging comes following a meeting of community TV heads in Melbourne last week.

“Every time another household does as the Government asks and buys a new digital TV or a digital set top box they potentially lose the ability to watch their Community TV channel,” said  Laurie Patton from the Australian Community Television Alliance.

ACTA reiterated its expansive local content, supporting Australian …

Community TV rallies for Logie invite

Following from media coverage earlier this week on the ABC, the push to recognise community television at the Logie Awards continues.

Now non-profit industry body The Australian Community Television Alliance (ACTA) has called on Logie organisers to allow Channel 31’s The Bazura Project to compete for the award for peer-voted Outstanding Comedy Show.

“At a time when there are continuing calls for increased local content on Australian television we believe that this decision is unfair and unreasonable,” said Laurie Patton, ACTA spokesman and CEO of TVS (Television Sydney).

“Where will we find the next …

The Bazura Project v Logies

Media Watch last night reported on correspondence between the TV Week Logie Awards and the presenters of Channel 31’s cult comedy show The Bazura Project.

Writer / Director / Presenter Shannon Marinko had hoped to submit their movie review show for the panel-voted Outstanding Comedy Show. According to Media Watch, Marinko knew he wouldn’t be a shot at winning but had hoped that in a year without The Chaser, Kath & Kim and Chris Lilley there was at least a chance for a nomination.

But TV Week doesn’t include nominations for community television …
