TV Tonight Awards 2009: The year of Shaun Micallef
The votes are in.
Readers have spoken on their best and worst television for 2009 in the third annual TV Tonight Awards.
The winners: Shaun Micallef, MasterChef and Packed to the Rafters.
Over 1000 surveys were completed this year, and there were some definite trends. Some choices were clear decisions, others were tight races.
Several “winners” were also “losers” elsewhere, showing a divided audience, and a number of populist shows proved their mettle by staying ahead of underdogs.
Shaun Micallef won both Favourite Male and Most Underrated Performer, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your …

The success of Spicks and Specks and Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (both directed by Jon Olb) has other networks reaching for the pilot slate.
The Age notes Nine has filmed a pilot for a new panel-style talk show with The Chaser’s Julian Morrow as host and other comedians. Nine is apparently approaching it as a ”workshop” rather than a full-blown pilot. There were previous reports of a panel show for Eddie McGuire as far back as August.

Online is good news for Good News Week
“Someone asked ‘How do you have a hit show on television?’ and I said ‘Get axed, wait seven years and come back,” laughs Mikey Robins.
In an era when TV fans are calling for a number of shows to return to our screens, Good News Week is a rarity. It was revived seven years after departing our screens and has managed to survive as a popular show. The TEN comedy series now has two extra years under its belt, with a third to begin in February.
Tonight it ends 2009 with its annual …
Julian Morrow: “Sorry but….”
Julian Morrow has said that the ABC interfered in Chaser skits following its reaction to the Make A Realistic Wish sketch.
At last night’s Andrew Olle Media Lecture Morrow spoke about the controversial chapter in the comedy show’s final season.
The lecture, which airs tomorrow night on the ABC, served as a right of reply for The Chaser in a much calmer media environment.
Despite the apology issued by The Chaser following the sketch, Morrow appears to have now qualified their statements.
Last night he says it was directed only at those who had been …

Two of the legendary Goodies team are in Sydney at the moment appearing at World’s Funniest Island, a comedy event staged on Cockatoo Island as part of the month-long Crave Sydney festival.
It’s not quite the Lost Island of Munga, but for the Goodies a gig on Cockatoo Island is just fine.

Kamahl angry over unkind comedy
Renowned singer Kamahl has weighed into the Hey Hey debate -and doesn’t like what he sees.
The Malaysian-born Australian has long been lampooned on the show, seemingly with affection, but his statements today paint a different picture.
Kamahl told The Daily Telegraph he had endured years of racist remarks, despite numerous appearances on the show. He admits he used to laugh along, but after his likeness was sketched into the notorious Jackson Jive sketch, he is critical of the Channel Nine show.
“They are just trying to push the envelope. Like The Chaser. The …
