Vale: Peter Graves
Peter Graves, best known as the cool team leader of Mission: Impossible, has died aged 83.
Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, about a week shy of his 84th birthday, his publicist said.
The solidly-spoken Graves appeared in dozens of films and television shows in a career of nearly 60 years but it was his role as Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in the long-running spy series that is most remembered.
The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 …

Desperate spin-off on the cards
Now here’s a series with promise: a Desperate Housewives spin-off for Kathryn Joosten and Lily Tomlin, two terrific character actresses whose performances as Karen McCluskey and her sister Roberta have provided a great comic sub-plot this season.
Joosten has been memorable on the show from the get go, especially with her scenes with Felicity Huffman (Lynette). She’s picked up Emmy Awards as a result of her work on the show.
Tomlin of course is lauded as a film actress, even though she hit the big time on TV’s Laugh-In in the 1960s. …
Remembering Bea
The passing of Bea Arthur on the weekend reminded me of her appearance in Australia during the mid 1990s (I think!) for the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
I was at a Press Conference for the launch at which Golden Girls’ Arthur appeared. Even there she was a class act, with just a few select quotes keeping journalists hooked.
I thought it might be nice to publish this photo, in which she sat beside the Victorian Premier at the time, one Joan Kirner.
Also at the launch was Tiny Tim and ventriloquist David Strassman. What an …
Vale: Bea Arthur
Legendary actress Bea Arthur, star of the hit shows The Golden Girls and Maude died on Saturday. She was 86.
The tall, deep-voiced actress died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side. She died of cancer.
Arthur was born Bernice Frankel in New York City in 1922. When she was 11, her family moved to Cambridge, Md., where her father opened a clothing store. At 12 she had grown to full height, and she dreamed of being a petite blond movie star like June Allyson. There was one …
