Birth for a nation

The final week of the ratings year is over and it was a Rafters baby that defeated singing Idols, Celebrity Masterchefs, new Apprentices, Geeks and Robbie Williams. Seven enjoyed a clean sweep of Week 48, winning all 7 nights, 3 key demos and all 5 cities -it was almost a microcosm of 2009, but this year Nine has seen to it that it didn’t quite enjoy that triumph.

The Seven Network won Week 48 with 31.3% over Nine’s 26.8% and TEN’s 21.3%. The ABC had 15.2% and SBS 5.4%.

GO! had 3.1% over …

1.3m for Celebrity MasterChef

Celebrity MasterChef finished on a positive note as the night’s top show with nearly 1.3m viewers last night.

Swimmer Eamon Sullivan took out the title from Kirk Pengilly and Rachael Finch after a two hour cook-off which saw all the former contestants gathered for the final scores. The figure was a long way from the finale of the original MasterChef Australia -in fact it was a long way behind weeknight episodes in the original season’s closing weeks.

But it did improve on the weekly celebrity version and peaked at 1.73m, easily winning its …

New Inventors Grand Final

It’s a black tie, one hour event tonight for the Grand Final of The New Inventors.

James O’Loghlin introduces the final five contenders who topped 120 inventions this year.

One will be named ‘Invention of the Year’ and win a suite of prizes from IP Australia, CSIRO, AusIndustry and Austrade. The prizes equate to a full life cycle of benefits for the invention – everything from lab testing, training in patents and intellectual property, marketing advice, assistance in developing the business in Australia and launching the product onto world markets.

September TV loves sport

Sport is surging in September. Two AFL matches roared to over 1.4m giving Seven and TEN some big victories, notably helping the latter save face after an ordinary week. NRL topped 1m at Nine and also helped the network win Sunday. But while audiences fluctuate it was GO! that again got Nine across the line to win Week 38 -the second such glory in a row.

Nine finished with 28.9% ahead of Seven’s 27.5% and TEN’s 20.7%. The ABC had 17.7% and SBS 5.2%.

Nine won all key demos 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54.

Nine wins the week

Having two and a half channels proved a winner for Nine in Week 37. Seven’s lack of a digital channel lost it the week by the slimmest of margins to Nine -just 0.2%. The extra share from GO!, which is added to Nine’s primary share,  helped it win a week in which its biggest audience was 1.33m, a far cry from figures on Seven.

Nine won with 28.1% over Seven’s 27.9% and TEN’s 20.8%. The ABC had 17.3% and SBS 5.8%.

Nine won all three demo groups 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54. In Total …

The New Inventors: Bright Sparks

No The New Inventors panel hasn’t shrunk, but there’s a “Bright Sparks” special coming up to showcase young inventors, aged 10 – 18.

The panel (pictured) is made up of kids who have already appeared on the show as inventors: Rachel Latimer, aged 15, was The New Inventors 2008 Bright Spark Award winner. She invented the Easy Girth, a device to help her tighten the girth on her horse’s saddle.

Arda Yilmaz, aged 15, was the first person under 18 to present his invention on The New Inventors. He appeared in the first …

Feelgood telly wins the week

Week 35 saw the ABC reinforce its appeal when Midsomer Murders took a cool 1.26m viewers on Sunday night, winning its timeslot without any dancing or singing as a lead-in. For a new Aussie drama like Rescue: Special Ops it was particularly brutal. Meanwhile GO! did well on Sunday with a 2.8% share, allowing Nine to sing its praises before it diminished by the end of the week. TEN had reason to smile over Rush too, but cutting through it all was Seven, taking yet another week in Total People.

Seven took …

Hot Seat’s bewitching week

For the second week running Nine’s ratings enjoyed a boost from GO! that blurs its performance. While all networks enjoy share from their secondary channels, in the case of Nine figures for its titles included viewers that watched shows on GO! On three nights Hot Seat beat Deal or No Deal, but how many of them were viewers for Bewitched? All will be revealed this week when the figures break out from today.

Seven won Week 34 with 28.3% ahead of Nine’s 26.6% and TEN’s 20.8%. The ABC had 16.5% and SBS …

Seven swims through topsy turvy week

It was a topsy turvy week of ratings in Week 33. While Nine had one night rising past the 30% share, TEN had another that sank below 15%. And the ABC has a new hit on its hands. That left Seven to remain steady through it all and win another week.

Seven finished with 28.0% over Nine’s 26.3% and TEN’s 21.6%. The ABC had 17.5% and SBS 6.6%.

But it was actually Nine that won 18-49 and 25-54 demos while TEN took out 16-39.

Seven won Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Nine won …

Ratings: Special Ops leaves Nine dangling

The Nine Network learned some tough lessons in Week 32. Two of its bright new hopes, Rescue: Special Ops and The Farmer Wants a Wife -both of which attracted critical acclaim- took middling figures for their season premieres. Nine appears to be finding out the hard way that a disillusioned audience may not even sample new content.

Seven streaked home with 28.7% over Nine’s 23.8% and TEN’s 21.5%. The ABC had 17.1% and SBS 8.9%.

Seven won 18-49 and 25-54 demos, and was just pipped in 16-39 by 0.1% by TEN. …

Top ABC executive quits

The ABC has lost a key creative executive with the resignation of Courtney Gibson, Executive Head of Content Creation.

She will take up the position of Director of Programmes at Southern Star Entertainment after six years with ABC TV.

ABC’s Kim Dalton said, “I am sad to see Courtney leave ABC TV. Courtney has made a significant contribution to Australian content output during her time here. In recognition of that, her role expanded during the six years from Head of Entertainment to the Executive Head of Content Creation in 2007.

“Courtney has that rare …
