ASTRA Conference: wrap

There are several articles in newspapers today following yesterday’s ASTRA Conference in Sydney.

Here is a summary of some of the speeches given:

Foxtel CEO Kim Williams took a swipe at ABC’s plans for a 24 hour News channel.

“The charter actually requires of the ABC that it take account of the broadcasting landscape and that it act in a complimentary sense with that landscape,” he said.

“These things require accountability – not just because it is frustrating to me, but because it requires accountability at law.”

NY Times: Underbelly 2: “sex-violence-death”

After it’s brief listing last week the New York Times now gives a full review for Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities, airing in the US on satellite network DirecTV.

The newspaper gives it a thumbs up, even if it can’t discern if the NZ references are meant to be comical or sincere. It even noted Matthew Newton’s ‘acrobatic sex.’

Here are some excerpts where it compares the show to The Sopranos:

It’s not at all the same sort of show, …

“Copious nudity” in Underbelly2 says NY Times

Underbelly has its US premiere this week on the DirecTV satellite channel.

As previously reported, it will actually begin with “A Tale of Two Cities,” the second in the gangster miniseries.

The New York Times describes the series as “a fact-based drama about the Australian drug trade that is in its third season on the Nine Network in Australia.

“That series, winner of both Logie (low-brow) and Australian Film Institute (high-brow) awards for best television drama, has told stories of dealers, police officers and politicians covering the late 1970s to about 2004,” …

The Lost Supper

It’s an idea that was borrowed by Battlestar Galactica and The Sopranos, but the cast of Lost slip perfectly into a simulated “Last Supper” photo shoot ahead of the show’s final season.

It makes very neat wallpaper for die-hard fans. Apparently it is also loaded with Season 6 clues.

Meanwhile producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof have given The Hollywood Reporter a lengthy interview focusing on the sixth season. It’s safe to read without fearing major Spoilers, unless you haven’t heard of any returning cast members (in which case maybe …

Seven 2010: Drama, factuals, epics and comedy

The Pacific, My Kitchen Rules, Cougar Town, ICU, The Marriage Ref, Damage Control, Hung and Royal Pains -just some of the new shows Seven has unveiled as part of its 2010 programming.

Following some time after announcements by opposition networks, Seven demonstrates another strong local slate, with several big international acquisitions. The titles may not be quite as lengthy as Nine’s promise for the year, but Seven has a good track record in delivering on its shows while some networks float titles that just never seem to eventuate (The Irwin Family’s Australia …

The Greatest TV Shows Of The Noughties?

Lists, lists and more lists emerging as the year and the decade draw to a close.

There are many opinions about which shows have shaped the last ten years of television.

The Sunday Age on the weekend noted: The Sopranos, The Office, Australian Idol, Big Brother and Lost.

“Big Brother debuted in the Netherlands in 1999. By 2001 we had our own version, and we could not believe our eyes. For the first time we were seeing not just real people on television, but real people like us. Despite furious denial in some …

7TWO: TV’s “best kept secret”

When the Seven Network finally unveiled its new digital channel, 7TWO, last week, it sent a clear message to its rivals. It was not going niche.

Unlike the sports-mad ONE and the youth-skewed GO!, 7TWO is a defiantly broad entertainment channel.

As Programming chief Tim Worner told TV Tonight, he is happy to embrace anybody with ‘a set of eyeballs and a digital telly.’

“We’ve gone for a strategy that uses our main channel to sell our digital channel. We lead in the main channel stakes. Our aim is to grow the number of …
