X Factor on the horizon again

The X Factor could be headed back to Australian television according to a report in today’s Daily Telegraph.

Nine’s director of production and development Andrew Backwell, Seven programmer Tim Worner and Sony Music chief Dennis Handlin have attended a London summit called by the show’s creator Simon Cowell last week.

The talent show previously aired in Australia on TEN, hosted by Daniel McPherson, but after following Australian Idol it didn’t succeed.

In the UK it continues to be a ratings blockbuster, while Simon Cowell is set to leave American Idol to bring the …

Talent shows: talk or touchdown?

Seems everyone is talking about talent shows lately. Will Australian Idol return? Who’s judging on Australia’s Got Talent? Should The X Factor make a return?

On the weekend there was speculation Kyle Sandilands could be headed for Australia’s Got Talent. News Limited newspapers quoted the former Idol judge’s manager as saying all three commercial networks were courting him.

“And some of the shows he’s looking at might surprise people. We’re talking to all the commercial networks — this year will show that there’s life beyond Australian Idol — or perhaps even in something …

Dannii: pregnant yes, AGT not quite.

All this news on Dannii Minogue sure is hard to follow. First the pregnancy tests were denied. Then she’s confirmed as expecting with Kris Smith (congrats to all).

Then she was back to doing Australia’s Got Talent. Now it seems she’s actually in negotiations on the gig.So it’s not a done deal just yet.

Media reports have been a bit all over the shop lately. Hopefully this rectifies any confusion that was furthered here.

It seems so far she is also not a dead cert for The X Factor 2010 and with a bump …

Dannii back for AGT

Dannii Minogue will return as one of the three judges for the fourth season of Australia’s Got Talent, claims the Daily Telegraph.

Host Grant Denyer is also a lock-on.

Red Symons and Tom Burlinson are ‘expected’ to be back, notes the newspaper. Symons’ return would no doubt preclude him from returning to Hey Hey it’s Saturday -unless, miraculously, both series happen to air back to back?

The Seven show is being primed for March, which will be an ultra-fast audition process, given the network has only just announced a call for acts. The show …

Simon Cowell to exit American Idol

It’s official. Simon Cowell has confirmed he will leave American Idol at the end of this season.

The announcement follows speculation he would not re-sign a new Idol contract.

In departing the show, he also confirms expectations that he would bring The X Factor to FOX. As Creator of the show, he will make a lot more money than sticking with Idol.

Cowell said that even though he was offered a pile of money to stay, he wanted a “new challenge”.

Idol’s ninth season begins tomorrow, with Ellen DeGeneres set to replace Paula Abdul in …

Auditions: Australia’s Got Talent

As noted earlier, Seven is indeed returning Australia’s Got Talent for a fourth season, despite leaving the show off a list of 2010 highlights. Must have been more contracts to lock in (like Red Symons or Dannii Minogue? Who knows….).

It will be interesting to hear if the judges have changed, especially with Hey Hey it’s Saturday wanting its man for Red Faces (could Dicko take a seat?). The show is also likely to surface much later this year, given auditions for 09 took place in October 08. But Dannii will be …

Report: Idol out for 2010

Channel TEN will reverse its decision to air Australian Idol this year according to a feature story in today’s Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper claims the show will be “rested” this year despite it being announced as part of the network’s 2010 line-up.

“TEN is going to rest Australian Idol for 2010. They will make a decision towards the end of 2010 as to whether it will return in 2011,” an unnamed source said. “They have asked Fremantle for ideas on how to relaunch in 2011.”

Last year was Idol’s softest year on record …

How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?

Let’s get one thing straight. This UK reality series took place in 2006. So if you know the winner there isn’t much point going on with this series. If not, then you’re in for a bit of a camp olde tyme….

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has been so synonymous with popular entertainment that it really shouldn’t come as much surprise that even he, a pure thespian, should succumb to the lure of Reality Television to cast his next big thing: the role of Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music.

ALW of …

TV Tonight Awards 2009: The year of Shaun Micallef

The votes are in.

Readers have spoken on their best and worst television for 2009 in the third annual TV Tonight Awards.

The winners: Shaun Micallef, MasterChef and Packed to the Rafters.

Over 1000 surveys were completed this year, and there were some definite trends. Some choices were clear decisions, others were tight races.

Several “winners” were also “losers” elsewhere, showing a divided audience, and a number of populist shows proved their mettle by staying ahead of underdogs.

Shaun Micallef won both Favourite Male and Most Underrated Performer, while Talkin’ ‘Bout Your …

Dannii, Got Talent cleared of complaints

Ofcom, Britain’s television watchdog has cleared both Dannii Minogue and Britain’s Got Talent of any wrong-doing following a string of complaints over separate issues.

Minogue was given the all-clear over a joke she made about a contestant’s sexuality on The X Factor.

After singer Danyl Johnson changed the gender of his lyrics in the Dreamgirl’s song I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going, Minogue joked that if bisexuality reports in the newspaper were true he needn’t have directed his lyrics to a female.

The high-rating show netted nearly 4,000 complaints over the remark, while …

When Molly meets Whitney

This Sunday Night, guest reporter Molly Meldrum will talk to Whitney Houston in another of her media rounds for her new album, I Look To You.

La Diva (that’s Whitney, not Molly) has been doing quite a few interviews lately including Good Morning America, Oprah and The X Factor UK.

The Bird Man
Jeb Corliss is a daredevil. He’s leapt off some of the world’s tallest buildings wearing just a wingsuit. Now, Sunday Night joins him as he prepares for his biggest challenge yet – flying down the edge of the Matterhorn, …

Houston & Hasselbeck, bustin’ out all over

Two moments on international telly that are best related with a single post, given they are united in their theme…

The first is Whitney Houston, who appeared on Britain’s X Factor singing “Million Dollar Bill.”

She had to clutch her gown all the way through the song, especially when it began to unravel behind her.

“I sang myself outta my clothes,” she said.

You can see the full clip here with things starting to come undone from around 2:10 mins.

Houston also didn’t seem to know much about when her album was getting a UK …
