Daylight robbery for network shows
Now that we are well and truly into Daylight Saving some viewers will be aware that they are seeing their regular programming delayed -or in some cases- more delayed than usual.
Queensland viewers will have noticed that Sunrise and Today are now on a one hour time delay.
A year ago Today attempted to adjust for Queensland airing between 5 and 8.30am, with an extra Queensland-only half an hour. This year the show advises it is sticking with its regular 5:30 - 9am telecast with a delay for Queensland viewers. South Australian, Northern …
ABC beats TEN as Seven wins
It was the week that American critics began to knife Kath & Kim (officially), ABC told staff it would cut up to 35 production jobs, Nine denied having a contract with the wife of a convicted crim, an actor lambasted his former soap, Today Tonight announced its next host would be a sports presenter and said its film crew helped -not hounded- an interviewee, Seven ’streamlined’ its Lotto results, buyers eyed a key production company, the Imparja / Nine Darwin deal fell apart, a TV critic died, and suddenly so did …
Phantoms in Today’s video library
The Today show ran the wrong footage from Phantom of the Opera this morning for its story on the death of actor Rob Guest.
Instead it showed Australia’s original Phantom, Anthony Warlow.
Guest replaced Warlow who had to bow out due to cancer. Warlow has since recovered including a return to the role.
Rob Guest, who has played the Phantom longer than any actor in the world, died late last night in St. Vincent’s Hospital following a stroke.
No day but Today for Karl
Newly-empowered Karl Stefanovic says in an interview today that there was a time working on the Today show where his esteem hit such a low that Mike Munro once tried to tell him he’d been offered his job.
But Stefanovic hung on, delivering the best he could -a strategy which has ultimately won him respect, and a future at Nine.
Last week there were reports he had held talks with Seven over the hosting gig on Today Tonight. While there are varying stories on the finer details, not even Stefanovic is denying he …
Bondi Vet for MIPCOM
UK distributor Steadfast International will take TEN’s factual series Bondi Vet to MIPCOM this year, but there is still no indication of when the show will air in Australia.
MIPCOM, along with MIPTV, is one of the international industry’s key trade events, due mid-October in Cannes.
Featuring Sydney veterinarian, Dr. Chris Brown, formerly of Harry’s Practice, Burke’s Backyard, and Today, the series was produced by WTFN.
Steadfast says the (14×30′) series is shot in HD, following Brown as he lives, works and surfs on the world’s most famous beach. It was originally mooted as …

The early news on TEN
Network TEN has denied rumours it is planning a morning breakfast show to rival Sunrise, Today and the new ABC2’s Breakfast.
Network insiders said a pilot for the program had already been shot in Sydney with network’s early news finance presenter Kathryn Robinson. Earlier this month The Age reported Bill Woods filmed a pilot for a new-look early morning News programme.
But a TEN spokeswoman yesterday told news.com.au was shooting for the regular 6am bulletin and wasn’t looking to dump its morning kids line-up.
But an unnamed rival said, “You can’t do …

Getting into the AFL spirit, Nine’s Today show will broadcast live from Geelong on Friday morning -yes, with Karl Stefanovic.
The team will descene upon Steampacket Gardens and bring with them singer Pete Murray and recently wedded Catriona Rowntree.
Even Richard Reid will be there…

Network brawl over Stefanovic meeting
The Seven Network has rejected claims made by the Daily Telegraph yesterday regarding Karl Stefanovic.
The newspaper quoted Nine’s David Hurley as stating that Seven had courted Stefanovic with a private dinner at David Leckie’s house. Seven’s “play for him was over the top, dinner at Leckie’s place, the whole bit,” Hurley said.
But Seven has hit back claiming there was no dinner meeting and that Stefanovic was seeking an exit from Nine to Seven.
Seven claims the Today show host privately expressed his wishes and even signed an agreement on terms with …
Karl in demand
“We hear that Karl Stefanovic is hosting A Current Affair next year,” said Seven spies yesterday. “Apparently, Leila McKinnon’s been overhead telling a few people at lunch today.”
Really? Leila McKinnon, who fills-in as host of ACA, is of course also wife to Nine boss David Gyngell.
But after this line was circulating to media yesterday, Nine communications man David Hurley went one step better by saying that David Leckie had, in fact, tried to convince Stefanovic to front Today Tonight next year.
Leckie apparently dined Stefanovic at his house but failed at luring …
8am with Bill Woods?
Yesterday’s Age newspaper reported that TEN’s Bill Woods filmed a pilot on Friday for a new-look early morning News programme.
Woods currently hosts the one-hour Early News at 6am with Kathryn Robinson, which is followed by C classified programmes from 7-9am.
Could TEN be looking to move the programme to 8am as a stronger lead-in to 9am with David & Kim?
Viewers may well respond to a no-fuss news hour when its only real choices are the fluffier Sunrise and Today -but having comprehensive news sources, including reporters, would be critical to its success.
Last …
