US dramas directed by John Polson

Aussie director John Polson sure is doing well for himself in the US.

In the next 7 days there are 2 US shows he has directed airing on Australian television.

Tomorrow night’s episode of The Mentalist “Blood In, Blood Out” airs at 8:30pm on Nine.

Next Sunday night the Tropfest creator has also directed “Unorthodox”, an episode of The Good Wife. It airs at 8:30pm on TEN.

The end for Wilfred

“I don’t want to be a 40-year-old man talking to a guy in a dog-suit,” says Adam Zwar.

“I want to explore other characters. I could probably write Wilfred ’til I’m 70 but I’ve got everything I want out of these two series.”

Movie Extra channels free for 2 weeks

Foxtel subscribers are in for a treat at the moment with the Movie Networks suite of channels currently available to all subscribers until March 8th.

Last night Movie Extra aired Tropfest 2010, which will also be repeated this Saturday arvo at 1pm.

On Thursday Movie Extra premieres Season 3 of Mad Men.

And on March 8 it airs the Academy Awards live.

The channels on offer include Movie One, Movie Two, FMC Family, Starpics 1, Starpics 2, Movie Extra, Movie Greats, TCM and World Movies.

However the offer doesn’t extend to HD Channels.

Alan Brough’s next career as Red Carpet bitch

If his career on Spicks and Specks were to take a sudden turn, Alan Brough could almost take up a new career hosting on Red Carpets.

Brough and Adam Hills hosted Movie Extra’s live Tropfest broadcast in 2009, and will resume the roles for the 2010 event this Sunday.

He told TV Tonight he was surprised how much he enjoyed the Red Carpet hosting.

Returning: Tropfest

Adam Hills and Alan Brough will host Movie Extra’s Tropfest broadcast next month.

The world’s biggest short film festival will once again screen live to air, at 7:30pm on Sunday 21st February from The Domain, Sydney.

It will include full event commentary, coverage of the red carpet glamour, interviews with judges and key figures of the Australian film industry, roving reporters and vox pops with the punters.

The Nine Network will again have a TropFest special at a date yet to be announced.

The signature item for 2010 is “Dice.”

Since launching ABC3 in early December, it isn’t the pride of place drama My Place that is resonating most with the young audience, but Scotty Tweedie and his Prank Patrol Ninjas.

Returning: Chandon Pictures

ABC picks up Movie Extra’s Chandon Pictures a second time round, offering the show as comedy fare over summer.

Created and directed by Tropfest winners, Rob Carlton and Alex Weinress, the series returnes to follow the misadventures of Tom Chandon (Rob Carlton) and his fledgling video production company.

This season’s guests include Don Hany, Lynette Curran, Roy Billing, Marshall Napier and Doug Scroope.

In the Season Two, Tom returns somewhat defeated from a brief stint in Hollywood. His brother Carmichael has taken a job in Singapore and Chandon Pictures have opened up new headquarters. …

Tropscore search for new composer

Usually talent searches are for performers and models, occasionally filmmakers or writers, but MAX has joined with Tropfest to find the next big thing in film scoring.

This national competition celebrates the union of music and film and provides a creative platform for musicians and composers.

The second Tropscore competition is open to experienced and amateur musicians, composers, bands and artists of all ages. The winner will have the opportunity to: perform their score at Movie Extra Tropfest 2010, perform live on MAX, and have their composition included on the 2010 Movie Extra …

Airdate: Flickerfest 2009

Actor Damian Walshe-Howling will host short film festival Flickerfest for the Movie Extra channel. It follows the channel screening Tropfest 2009.

This will be a 6 part behind-the-scenes look at the world of creating Australia’s best short films.

Walshe-Howling is a good candidate for this task, having directed his own short film, The Bloody Sweet Hit, in 2007. Here he will be talking to the actors, directors and producers of these various short films.

Each episode will include two short films, interviews with the filmmakers and a Director’s Toolkit.

Airdate: Tropfest 2009

Tropfest, the world’s largest film festival has its annual free to air screening next month when Channel Nine shows the finalists in this year’s competition.

In February audiences of over 150,000 watched the 16 finalist films beamed live via satellite to venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide, Gold Coast and Brisbane. It also screened live on Movie Extra.

The winner was NSW’s Genevieve Clay with Be My Brother.

Channel Nine screens the two hour showcase at 9:30pm Saturday April 11th.

Funny business

England, Poland, Romania, Finland, Serbia, USA and Russia -all territories that have picked up Movie Extra’s  Chandon Pictures. Not a bad innings for a series that sprang to life after Rob Carlton and Alex Weinress won Tropfest 2006, albeit with another project.

The comedy series set within the ailing video production company headed by Tom Chandon (Carlton) is back for more hapless adventures.
