Community TV wins digital breakthrough
It has been a long, hard-fought campaign -but the Community Television sector sees a light at the end of the digital tunnel.
The Rudd Government has finally delivered it the news it has been seeking: a switch to digital broadcasting.
The Government will temporarily allocate vacant spectrum, previously known as Channel A, to the community broadcasting sector, allowing Community TV stations C31 in Melbourne, TVS in Sydney, QCTV in Brisbane and Channel 31 Adelaide to simulcast their services until the switch to digital-only television in capital cities in 2013. Community TV digs at SBS
Community television took the opportunity to remind us of its worth this week when TVS General Manager Laurie Patton pointed out the similarities between a new SBS show, Costa’s Garden Odyssey, and its own Vasili’s Garden.
Costa’s Garden Odyssey is one of four local shows SBS airing tomorrow night.
In the series, landscape architect Costa Georgiasdis (pictured right), takes a ‘holistic’ approach to gardening. He is described as a ‘Greek garden god aiming to spread his green wisdom while celebrating cultures and communities and their connections to plants.’

Community TV looks to state premiers
As state premiers meet with Prime Minister Rudd in Darwin today, the community television sector is urging them to pressure the Federal Government to support a shift to a digital platform.
The urging comes following a meeting of community TV heads in Melbourne last week.
“Every time another household does as the Government asks and buys a new digital TV or a digital set top box they potentially lose the ability to watch their Community TV channel,” said Laurie Patton from the Australian Community Television Alliance.
