XYZnetworks signs acquisition deal

XYZnetworks has signed a multi-year volume deal with distributor RDF Rights, part of the RDF Media Group, to acquire new titles.

The LifeStyle Channel, LifeStyle FOOD and LifeStyle YOU will now have access to titles including Location Location Location, The Secret Millionaire, Ladette to Lady, Wife Swap, Relocation Relocation, How to Look Good Naked, The House of Tiny Tearaways and Tough Love.

XYZ has agreed to a minimum of 300 hours of first run exclusive content across its portfolio of channels with equal footing to FTA television to acquire key titles.

Shine Australia to produce Junior Masterchef

While MasterChef Australia is produced by FremantleMedia Australia, Junior Masterchef will be produced this year by Shine Australia for Network TEN.

The newly-established production company retains the rights for the MasterChef spin-off from its parent Shine Group, which licensed the rights to the original show to FremantleMedia. The deal did not include FremantleMedia having all spin-off rights.

Shine Group CEO Elisabeth Murdoch launched the new production company in Melbourne today at George Calombaris’, Press Club restaurant. She was joined by her joint Australian CEOs, Mark and Carl Fennessy, formerly of FremantleMedia Australia.

Balloon hoax all for Mythbusters-style show

The parents of ‘balloon boy’ were looking for a way to generate media attention to help them pitch a Mythbusters-style show to TV stations, according to a former colleague.

6 year old Falcon Heene, the boy from Colorado who today was found alive after fears he had been stuck in a home-made helium balloon, appeared on an episode of the US Wife Swap series and a follow-up reunion.

Survivor: Tocantins for summer

Survivor: Tocantins will be airing on Nine during the summer.

The 18th season, set in Brazil, aired in the US in February. It follows Survivor: Gabon currently airing on GO!

Also set to come across summer is the long-awaited return of UK fantasy series Primeval with its mix of CGI dinosaurs and family adventure.

Nine also promises Fringe, What’s Good for You, Wife Swap, ER and The Mentalist for summer.

More titles are yet to be revealed.

ABC renews Housewives, Betty, Grey’s, Brothers & Sisters

America’s ABC has announced renewals for several key series: Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty, Private Practice, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Wife Swap, Supernanny, Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelor and America’s Funniest Home Videos.

They join Lost, which is set to return for its final season as part of a three-season pickup in 2007.

Housewives creator Marc Cherry told the media and ABC he wanted a similar four-season renewal for his show, but ABC has opted to add on only another year to his current agreement.
