The end for Wilfred
“I don’t want to be a 40-year-old man talking to a guy in a dog-suit,” says Adam Zwar.
“I want to explore other characters. I could probably write Wilfred ’til I’m 70 but I’ve got everything I want out of these two series.”
And with that, dog-lovers everywhere will be lamenting the fact that Wilfred won’t be coming back for a third series.
The SBS comedy, which started its second season on air this week, has been the plaything of Zwar and co-creator Jason Gann for several years, first as a Tropfest film in …
Charlie puts the Sheen on Mondays
What is it about Melbourne viewers and Two and a Half Men? Last night the new episode hauled 635,000 in that city, rising to a big 1.58m viewers -and very probably assuring its place as the week’s top show. No doubt the end of the long weekend in Melbourne helped as viewers settled in for an early night.
Both the Charlie Sheen comedy and My Kitchen Rules have been battling it out for top place recently. Last night Seven’s cooking contest ina pseudo MasterChef kitchen settled with just under 1.4m viewers, still …
Wilfred speaks out
Television’s only bong-smoking mutt returns next week for his second series on SBS ONE.
And as Cindy and Adam barrel headlong into a wedding, TV Tonight talks to the dog behind the mangy suit, Wilfred, to see what makes him tick. And what ticks him off.
Why do you dislike Adam so much? Or do you just love to hate him?
Adam is not a bad guy. He just doesn’t meet my needs… and he is banging Sarah!
Can he possibly get any more offensive than he is already?
Can Adam? You are confusing me. I …
Returning: Wilfred
Television’s most irascible, offensive, lazy, cynical and pot-smoking mutt is coming back.
Wilfred returns for his long-awaited second series on SBS in early March.
The new series written by and starring Jason Gann and Adam Zwar has been a long time in the making. It’s been nearly three years since we last saw new episodes.
But the man-in-dogsuit comedy is like no other premise, and this season he has a bunch of celebrity guests in tow including Stephen Curry, Samuel Johnson, Josh Lawson, Dan Wyllie, Kim Gyngell, Ditch Davey and Alex Menglet.

2010: SBS looks beyond Top Gear
Next Monday night SBS bids farewell to Top Gear for the final time.
The show drives off to Nine after a ferocious acquisition battle last year that SBS lost due to being outbid.
But the network is keen to remind us it was just one hour of television a week, and that it still has plenty to bring its “six billion stories” theme to life.
This year SBS has the World Cup exclusive, a third series of East West 101, Eurovision in Oslo, more Mad Men, Skins, Inspector Rex, Entourage and Shameless.
Over summer, the …
2008-09 Production Report
Screen Australia has released the findings of its annual Production Report on the state of film and television.
Never wanting to paint a bleak picture, it manages to find optimism with a healthy state of production, if boosted by the big investment of George Miller’s Happy Feet 2 and the $100m Hollywood animation Guardians of Ga’Hoole in Sydney.
TV Tonight has taken a look at the television sector separately, and the results are still very good. While series / serials were down, mini-series (which also includes telemovies) were up.
The …
Top Gear loss “not the be-all and end-all”
TV Tonight continues its interviews with key executives in television. Following on from last week’s interviews with Seven, ABC, TEN and Nine, today the spotlight turns to SBS Director of Content Matt Campbell.
The last two weeks have not been without their challenges for Campbell, who learned the fate of Top Gear, a programme he had taken a punt on many years ago when no other network would touch it.
Having spent a lot of time trying to convince the BBC it should be staying at its natural home, he admits the loss …

Geoffrey Rush will narrate Adam Zwar’s new comedy series about tabloid journalism, Lowdown.
Filming begins in Melbourne this week on the eight-part comedy series, based on Zwar’s former career as a showbiz journo for a newspaper.
Kim Gyngell has also joined as the fictional Sunday Sun’s editor, while Julia Zemiro will play Hope, a sassy publicist.
Previously announced cast include Paul Denny as photographer Bob, Beth Buchanan as on-again-off-again girlfriend Rita and Dalian Evans as inept GP Dr James.
Zwar (Wilfred, Valentine’s Day, Rush) will play Alex, who interviews high profile celebrities for his column, …
ABC gets the Lowdown on Adam Zwar
The ABC will produce a new 8 part comedy, Lowdown, starring and co-created by actor / writer Adam Zwar (Wilfred).
Zwar, who has just completed a second season of Wilfred for SBS, told TV Tonight, “I created it with Amanda Brotchie, an AFI Award winning filmmaker. It’s based very loosely on my career as a celebrity profile writer for a Sunday newspaper.”
Joining Zwar in the cast are Paul Denny (Love of Lionel’s Life, Wilfred, Hawke), Beth Buchanan (Hey Dad, The King) and Dailan Evans (Eagle and Evans, Mark Loves Sharon.)
During his time …
Wilfred: Old dog, new tricks.
Australia’s favourite anarchic mutt, Wilfred, is on his way back. Production on the second series is currently nearing completion, and as TV Tonight learned whilst visiting the shoot, the SBS talking dog is more cynical than ever.
Wilfred is already a cult favourite after just one series on SBS. The creation of Jason Gann and Adam Zwar, it began life as a film in TropFest 2002 and aired as a fully-fledged TV series in 2007 under Renegade Productions (RocKwiz, Ned Kelly Uncovered), but …

Sklan worked at SBS for three and a half years where she was commissioning editor on the telemovie Saved, the animated feature Mary and Max, the five minute comedy interstitial series Marx and Venus, and the indigenous short series, Bit of Black Business.
