Why do dogs hate Law & Order so much?

It's official. Canines just hate the theme tune from Law and Order.

If you’re a dog owner, try sitting your pooch down in front of Law and Order and see how they like the show’s theme tune.

Chances are they won’t.

Get a load of these YouTube clips that feature a bunch of dogs that go right off when the show’s theme tune kicks in.

Coincidence? You can watch 35 of them here.

  1. Can’t be super high frequency noise like a dog whistle – Post engineers generally cut that stuff out before/during the master – not to mention most domestic TV’s speakers are incapable of producing a frequency so high that it would set a dog off like that. There’s something else going on here – I’d say the clarinet has something to do with it – that and the abundance of “portamento” notes – notice how a lot of them howl at that siren at the end. Even my dog used to howl as ambulance sirens went past. Even so, it is odd that some of these dogs even seem to be perturbed from the very beginning of the song – unless they’ve heard it before and are remembering that it makes them uncomfortable.

Either that or it’s some kind of secret message being sent to dogs by aliens.

  2. Never let it be said that TV Tonight doesn’t occasionally break the big stories!

My dog’s not allowed to watch television as it gives him bad ideas.

  3. I am wondering of it has anything to do with the clarinet or soprano sax (can’t tell with dogs howling over the top…due to the high pitch. I played clarinet for many years and mainly played at school or TAFE because he would howl whenever I played…

  4. I bet there would be more videos of dogs not reacting to the Law & Order theme song but there isn’t because it’s just not interesting to follow up. One theory is that there could be some audio frequencies within the theme song recording are unpleasant for a dog’s hearing. Maybe they were recording the theme song and someone in the next room was using a dog whistle at the same time.

  5. my dogs don’t care about the law and order theme but one of them does watch tv and I just showed her those videos and it was hilarious, it took her a while to figure out they were on the computer and not the tv but once she found them she watched them very intently. she’s not really a howler but was whinging in sympathy with those dogs and looked very concerned for them. she kept nosing at the screen and checking behind the computer screen to see if she could actually find real dogs.
